    L.A. County Gunsmith?

    Friends,

Could you recommend a top flight gunsmith in the Los Angeles County area?

    Cordially,

    John,

I have some work done at Bain and Davis, prices are reasonable and I've never had any problems with their work. Actually they're working one of my 1911 rights now.

L.A. County is pretty huge. You might want to narrow your location a bit.

I think top flight might mean more to him that distance.

I'm currently unhappy with the 3 places I've used since King's went away... Sorry.

There's also Alan Tanaka and Jim Hoag to consider.

Brad at Ammo Bros in Cerritos is top notch. Did some work on my 1911 and I was very pleased. Love shooting that gun!!!

Tanaka has an outstanding reputation. He has never done any work for me but he has for many friends of mine.

I like Dave Lawfer of Dave's Metal Works in Covina. He builds a 1911 as if he were building a benchrest rig. His machining ability is superb. He also works on revolvers and AR's.

Say what? I didn't know this. When did Kings Gun Works shut down? They worked on 2 of my 1911s. Quality work. Won't ever sell em.

This is what I can say about Kings and being open. They were bought out and expect a name change.

Parts will continue to be sold under the Kings name and they were kept by the Capone family.

The new owner is some kind of gun smith. I don't mean to dimish his/their abilities I just have no knowledge of the quality of the work.

This also could be wrong information it's what I heard from somebody that should know.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

He's done quite a bit of 1911 work for me, on four different Pre-80 Series Commanders - top shelf!

I'm alittle worried about him though - I've stopped by his shop 4 times in the last 30 days, and no one is there; stopped by TODAY and there were 4-5 FedEx, DHL and UPS "attempted delivery" notices stuck to the door. Does anyone know what's up? I hope he and his family are O.K. - seems like quite a long time to take a vacation...

I've had luck with Dean Wilkerson in Van Nuys on a couple occasions -- he put a couple sights on some pistols for me, and also replaced a broken safety switch on a shotgun.

Funny you should mention that. I've tried calling his shop several times over the past few weeks and the phone has never been answered (well, the answering machine picked up....).

He missed the sight pin on my Python and whacked the sight base instead. Never again.
