Handgun registration question

My customer in LA has a gun in his possession that was from his friends in TX. But he moved to China do gave it my customer.

I told him better to get it registered, but he doesn't know how, since the original owner is no longer in the county.

Any suggestions I can pass to him?

From what I've read, the original owner would've had to gone through a FFL. That FFL would have to ship to your customer's FFL to do all the registration.

How did your customer acquire the gun from this friend? Hopefully, it was done legally if in Cali...

There really isn't enough info to determine if he aquired it lawfully, so I will just leave this bit of info here. He can fill out a voluntary registration form and mail it to the state along with a check for the registration. Let me find a link to the form.

Depending on when he recieved the handgun, he might not even have to worry about registration.

His friend moved from TX to CA and bright it with him. And now that he moved to China, he just left it with my customer.

Transfer was supposed to go to your customer through an FFL. Sounds like that did not happen. No real 'approved' recovery; since failure to transfer properly is a misdemeanor, statute of limitations is 3 years.

Looks like you are correct; I must have blurred that with 'wobblers' as described in 801. But I did have to go read 801 and following to even guess where I had gone wrong.

If friend has left the country and authorized him to dispose it, wouldn't it work much the same as an executor? He would just need a power of attorney for this transaction. DR

Let me squeak in here with a related question.

My brother in law purchased a new model 66 S&W 30 or so years ago, 25 years ago I purchased it from him, no paper work, no nothing. I think I gave him $200 for it and that was all that was done. I also have a few handguns that I purchased at gun shows 15-30 years ago, no paper work at all.

I also own handguns recently purchased from gun shops with DROS, etc.

What about my old handguns, do I need to register them somewhere ? I still shoot them but there is no record I own them and I would have no way to prove I have owned them for decades. I have always assumed these toys were fine as i owned them for so long but I could not prove it if I needed to.
