Sig P226 is a fantastic weapon. I don't have any experience with the P227 (45ACP version), but I suspect it's probably pretty good too. The P220 is awesome but is only single stack so doesn't have the capacity you're probably looking for. Beretta 92 is nice. I like the Sig a bit better though.

Seems a shame to rule out the M&P 9. But if your mind is made up on this, then so be it.

That's about it...along with what you've already listed. I don't think there's a bad choice in the bunch. Could always look at shotguns too if you don't have one yet.

Handgun rounds make poor manstoppers. We use handguns because they are small, portable, and easily concealable. If you aren't bound by those constraints then use a long gun like a shotgun or carbine. Make sure the fight is as unfair as possible by having more firepower than the intruder. Chances of them having a long gun are very slim.

While handguns are the least effective firearms, stopping power wise, commonly available, They are also far easier to access quickly and then maneuver in close dark quarters and exceedingly better for the untrained to retain when in close proximity to a threat, possibly a well trained threat. The chances of n untrained homeowner having his long gun "trapped" , "deflected" or "snatched" are far greater than the untrained homeoner with a handgun. It only takes an intruder moving a long gun off axis a few inches to safely deflect it. Then its a fight for the gun in the dark.

If you are trained with the long gun in CQB situations, by all means, its far more effective. I would opt for a shotgun over a rifle but that is just personal preference.

Given the list you provided, I would opt for the G17 with some very effective ammunition.

It's true that handgun rounds are poor man stoppers, generally speaking. At least compared to rifles and shotguns. It's also true, however, that shotguns and rifles may not be ideal for home situations. They can be hard to maneuver in close quarters and they take two hands. This can make things like dialing the police or helping small children challenging.

It just depends on one's situation.

Have you considered the FNP-9? Compact and reliable, mags are somewhat cheap, can sometimes find them for as low as $20, and has an integral rail. I think the standard mags hold 16 rnds. You can find them for as low as $400.

Big house, rifle and a home defense course is a good idea. Pistol of course is normally easier to keep handy and be discreet with if need be.

Pistol, I say go shoot a bunch and get the one that feels right to you. Don't worry about calibre beyond a 9mm or bigger.

I would recommend a 9mm on the basis that cheaper means you can shoot more.

Also… get some training.

Personally, I like the M&P's. I run the 9mm for the above reason, but the .40 is really controllable as well. Like I say though - personally… get what you like, and training is more important.

Off of your list I would say get the Glock 31 because yes, 357 SIG is awesome. If you really want .45 the 21 is a great choice. Personally I would go with max power and get a Glock 20. If you like the 357 SIG you should give 10mm a try. As far as capacity goes I'm totally fine with loosing 2 rounds to get the power of the 10mm compared to 9mm. The standard mags for the 20 hold 15 just like the 31 will and you can easily put extended base plates on it to hold more. Also with the 20 you can convert it to shoot several different calibers and it'll even safely shoot .40 S&W without modifications. (Yes I have done this and find it to function just fine. Let's not turn this thread into a war about it.) Good luck with your decision drifter. Really you're the only one who can make it.
