They are made by Israeli Weapons Industries (IWI) which is the corporate successor to Israeli Military Industries (IMI).

They are all hype. They are picky with ammo, their gas tubes foul pretty fast and that results in jams. Everyone I know with one thinks of it more as a novelty piece than a serious firearm.

They used to be made in Israel, by IMI. Magnum Research did finally take over manufacturing and they are now made in the USA.

I think it happened around the same time they made them all look alike (The older non-50 barrels had a different top-rail shape).

The .44s (newer) have two lightening grooves on the sides (.357 barrel has an extra groove on top).

I used to own a .50, made in Israel. It was 100% reliable when I had it, except the slide wouldn't always lock back (thumb hitting the lever maybe?).

There was nothing really wrong with it, but I sold it as I had no use for the thing. Would have made a nice boar hunting gun though.

The gas port never gave me any trouble, though the most I put through it was 50-100 rounds at a time. I cleaned the port after hitting 500 rounds.

Same reason I never bought a .500 later- what the heck am I going to do with it? They're fun to shoot, but ammo prices make you shoot less.

It's a novelty gun indeed...no practical use that I can think of. And it's a good test to see if you limp wrist! lol

Sure it's a novelty hand gun but, what fun. At the range your bang is like the big bore rifle, and people come over and take a look at your hand cannon. Heck it shoots pretty flat, out at 200 yards when you hit that empty beer keg. And when you show your buddies, it can plow that 50ae bullet through a 18" wood stump. We all got a laugh. Just plain ole fun shootin.

Some people hunt with it (pigs, deer, etc). That is a practical use. It is rather accurate (for a semi auto handgun) and has good stopping power in the 44 mag and 50AE models.

Personally, I favor large bore revolvers to the DE for a big thumping handgun. But, to each his own. I have never been a fan of the DE. The grip is huge and you need hot ammo to cycle it reliably. It is neat that it is semi-auto but I would take a 500SW or 460SW any day over the DE. Even most 454 Casull loads have more muzzle energy than the 50AE.

He was a fairly big guy in decent shape. I knew another fat azz one that carried a Ruger Super Redhawk .44mag when his employers allowed it.

The older DE models (Mark VII) had the non-interchangable platform. They were all made in Israel (IMI-Israel Military Institute), imported by Magnum Research. *No longer made*

The newer models (Mark XIX) with the fluted barrels, and wider barrels, had the interchangable platform *.357, .41, .44, .50AE* were all made made in the USA, to US spec by Magnum Research. *No longer made, and rare, and doesn not say Israel anywhere on the gun, all USA baby!*

Now, the DE Mark XIX's are all made in Israel (IWI-Israel Weapons Institute) and imported by Magnum Research. (Still made and what you see mostly today)

To my experience and knowledge, the US versions of the DE function just about flawlessly *if kept clean* like any gun. I had a Mark VII and it was notorious for jams and FTFeed's. Once in a great while, the slide wouldnt lock back at the end of a mag on the XIX, but this is due to not properly holding the gun firmly for the action to cycle, or not using a hot unuff load.

While picking up a little Ruger .22 at Turners today I saw a DE .44 with the brushed chrome finish.

It's in their online ad as well. Must have made the "safe fun" list.
