.22 Revolvers

Hey all, looking at picking up a .22 revolver for some cheap shooting. I shot my friend's and it was a lot of fun (not sure what kind it was.) Which guns do you reccomend I look into?

What kind of revolver were you shooting? A single or double action? I'd recommend at least a double action and anything with more than 6 rounds.

single action: Ruger Single Six and Bearcat

double action: Smith and Wesson Model 617, recently discontinued Ruger SP101 in .22LR

Shooting revolvers in 22lr is very satisfying, doesn't matter if DA or SA. I have two 22lr 6-shot revolvers, the accuracy is comparable with my Buckmarks, but I don't have to deal with what loads won't feed through my mags. I can put any type of 22lr ammo and as long it's not a dud it will shoot and not jam.

Shooting single action is fun, but gets tiresome after a while, loading and ejecting adds a lot of down time.

I'd get a DA or autoloader if you can. SA is more of a novelty. Nice thing about SA is odds are it will never, ever break.

I have 2 .22's both are S&W 617's one is 4" barrel and the other is 6" both are 10 round and a blast to shoot, box of 525 .22's for less then 15.00.
they cost more then most .22 out there but I think they were worth it.

S&W K22 Masterpiece. There is not a finer .22 revolver out there.

It depends a lot on what you want for accuracy.

If you want an accurate revolver, go with a S&W 617/17/18 (expensive) or a Ruger Single Six (affordable but SA only).

For fun plinking, almost any .22 revolver will do. I have a couple of High Standard Sentinels, a Taurus 94, and have shot an SP101 and S&W 317 snubby, and they're all fun to shoot, but not particularly accurate. My Single Six and Bounty Hunter are more accurate, plus you get .22 magnum with the combo package.

If I were going to buy one great .22 revolver, I'd get a 4" 10 shot 617. It's not very small or light, but is accurate, well balanced, and is a great shooter. If I couldn't swing the dough for that, I'd go for the Single Six.

I have two Single Sixes, one with a 7" and one with a 10" barrel. They are a kick to shoot and are quite accurate. The 10" has a 2X scope and is far more accurate than my vision is. Shooting LRs is inexpensive but the Magnum ammo gets a little pricey.

Fun guns without a doubt.

I think anything SA with a barrel over 3 or 4 inches doesn't have to be on the list.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Ruger Single Six's, but I'll admit I do not like the way they load/unload.
I'm actually looking to get a S&W 617. A little bit more pricey, but well worth it, IMO.

A 617 starts around $650 give or take $50. A good condition 34 kit gun starts at about $400 depending on condition. Find a Ruger SP101 at around $400 or a Taurus for about $300. A co-worker had a nice Rossi 22lr revolver, I forgot the model it is a neat little revolver and lots of fun for plinking. I'm sure if you keep visiting the gun shops you'll find a 22lr revolver on consignment for a price you can't afford to pass up.
