Ask around at m1911.org There's an issue with the beavertails and you need to get a specific type else there will be a lot of fitting and it won't blend well.

Yeah, I'll call up a few gun smiths and ask around. I found everything I wanted at Wilson Combat.

One thing remains, however. Can I have new dot sites installes on my GI slide?

You can have new sights put in, but if you want the Novak type sights, it is going to require milling new cuts into your existing slide to accomodate the sights. Look at parts on brownells.com, there are much more there for you to choose from. Remember, even if it says drop it, it may not "drop in". The other problem with drop in parts is that they will not be nicely fit, and they will require blending and finishing in order to look like they were an original part on the gun. Upgrading a 1911 is not as easy as it seems, you can't just order up parts and expect that everything will work out perfectly and be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. In my opinion you best bet would be to list out what you want done, call Deb at Springfield, and have their custom shop do the work. You will be much more pleased in the long run, it may cost a bit more, but you will know it was done right. Just my .2 cents. Good luck.

You will need to get the Smith&Alexander grip safety that is made for the springfield.I also would have to say goto brownells, thay have a huge selecion of 1911 stuff. I would order all the things you can do your self and have a smith do the rest.I do all my own work unless it it requires a mill. Let me tell you that getting the grip safety to fit and look right was a major pain in the a**.also if you do buy the parts instead of having springfield do it get a drop in ignition/trigger set like EGW,C&S, OR NOWLIN. They come with everything you need from the trigger,hammer,sear and all the springs.Alot of the thing you want done can be done buy you at home with some small files.the only thing that you need a smith for is to fit you'r grip safety unless you don't mind spending hours of filing and test fitting, and your sights as the novak sight need a novak cut in the slide. everything else will drop in with minor mods to the part.

The custom 1911 bug strikes again. Since you have the high GI spec ejection port, you may want that lowered and flared. Trigger job is a must.

Is Wilson combat not a source for quality parts then? Is it easy to disassemble the frame of a 1911? I've only stripped my pistol as indicated in the manual. It never involved anything in the frame.

Check this link out for frame disassembly, on an original design gun, it's easy as pie.

Yes wilson has good parts but brownells has wilson as well as a ton of other parts. and no the wilson grip safety will not look right with out major modifications.when you find a grip safety you like, it will have to have a .220 radius not the .250. The back of the springer is a little smaller than other makes.And yes, it is very easy to disassemble and put back together.

Should have saved a little bit more and just bought a Kimber. You'd have saved money in the long run and had a better gun.... IMO

I think its a great idea and a good project. I've got a Springfield Mil-spec that I've been fitting together a part at a time for years. I chose to put one of Ed Browns grip safety's on mine and used his jig to recut the radius. Pretty simple but you need a good eye to keep the sides even when you smooth it all out. (and you'll need to redo the finish) To do a good job is going to take a lot of work to get everything fit right, but if you take the time the results are well worth it. It's cost me about the same or less as the equivalent Kimber or any other name brand and I know my gun inside and out.

I'm not afraid of do-it-yourself work. I'd prefer to do as much myself as I can. In the end, this will still come out much less than any of the tricked kimbers or SAs on my list. I hadn't planned on doing anything to the gun at all but those feelings clearly changed. lol. The only thing I'm hesistant on doing myself is any hammer, sear, trigger work.

Here is the list of stuff on brownells I found. Looks like it will come out much cheaper here.
