I use the de-cocker on my Sigs with no problem, though I always point down range. I often do this so that I can practice DA.

As Lead Waster mentioned, when I used to use a CZ SP01 I had to put it in Sa mode prior to starting a match, which I disliked. Why not allow it to be cocked and locked? I felt their policy was needlessly reckless.

Yeah, manually decocking is dumb. Forcing you to manually decock an SP-01 at USPSA is really stupid. THe gun has a safety, the DA part is more a "second strike opportunity" than a "carry it decocked" feature, IMHO.

Ive never had/or seen a decocker fail in my nearly 20 years of shooting... so yes its mechanical and could fail, but Im confident saying that that isnt a common by any stretch occurence especially has most modern DA/SA pistols have a firing pin block that engages when being decocked specifically to prevent this.

I mean with that kind of logic, you should never chamber a live round because the momentum of the slide locking into battery might cause the hammer to fall due to parts breakage you didnt notice from your last range session. In fact it would be safest if you just never touched that gun again...
I hope you dont have night sights, you know tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen right?

        just playin...

Follow the 4 rules of gun safety, and remember all guns are always loaded.

        Use your decocker.

Anyone that uses their thumb to manually decock a pistol is a negligent discharge waiting to happen. Modern pistols with factory decock levers used correctly are completely safe in all respects. Now if some shade tree mechanic has decided to improve on the factory design with his own home work shop modification, then of course all bets are off. I would and have used the decock lever on a number of different pistols for the last 25 plus years, never an issue.

It's very dumb to decock a pistol/revolver by pulling the trigger and thumbing down the hammer on a live chamber. Don't do it. Decockers like those on the Sig and Beretta actually rotate or block the firing pin, so it's physically impossible for the hammer to strike the pin if it falls.

Not sure if I understand you. I carry two safety equipped CZ's, and decock them after loading. Cocked and locked on CZ's is a convenient feature, not the way they were designed to be carried.

To decock a safety model, put left thumb in front of hammer, in back of slide, pull trigger enough to release hammer, release trigger, slide thumb out. At that point you have a slightly longer pull than SA, and can shoot faster than C&L, and are safer when handling than striker fired.

I use My decocker on My bersa 380 all the time. Had no problems.
Just point in down range and decock. I use to carry it every day before I got My lcp.

As a result the person said he never uses the decocking mechanism because they are mechanical and do fail. So, what do you guys think is the more safe way? Also, can any one explain to me how a decocker actually works.
Your friend was gutsy. I wouldn't even stayed around and asked question. I would have packed my stuff and left the range.

The safest way for that guy is not to operate a gun because his logic was all screwed up for not using the decocking lever to decock his gun.

If this guy is for real, then I don't see how he can justify cocking the hammer in the first place? I mean, those sears are mechanical and they can fail

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

I hope I miss understand what you are saying. Sounds like you just said a CZ with a Safety is not designed to be carried Cocked and Locked?

                              Please clarify...
