    Flying to CA with handgun

For Christmas vacation I (a Texas resident) will be flying to SD, California for a few weeks (into the New Year as well) to visit family and I intend to bring my XDm and CZ75 with me. The TSA procedures appear to be pretty straightforward, so I am not concerned about that.

I'm worried about what happens after I get to CA. As far as I know, I can only have 10 rounders max. Are there any other major issues I should be aware of regarding possession (i.e. age requirements, special licences, etc)? I don't want to run into any problems if someone comes and checks while we're shooting on BLM. And since I'm also going to be flying out of KSAN when my vacation is over, I don't want anything confiscated either. I also don't want to get screwed over when the New Year hits and some new magic restriction gets my guns taken away.

Hopefully someone can help point me in the right direction.

No threaded barrels on semi-auto pistols.

While traveling here in CA do not CC as your TX CCW is not valid here; assuming you have a TX CCW.

While traveling in CA keep your pistols unload and in a locked container. What ever you had on the plane will work for this too.

Have fun with your friends and family.
    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Morrcarr67 is right on and you have it right about the 10 round mags. 11 does not equal 10 and since there is no "grandfather" situation for you, you can not have a mag that will hold more than 10. The locked container mentioned can be anything lockable, even a range bag or suitcase, as long as it makes the firearm in-accessible to you in the passenger compartment. You can lock it in the trunk and that will suffice also.

I just did the opposite and flew from SF to DFW and I'm still in Keller. Make sure the firearm is is a firearm container and the ammo is separate. I always use plastic wire ties on zippers so that if they are removed they can't reuse the tie. I also use a bright orange colored tie so that it stands out.

Never had a problem with TSA inspectors. They have been cool every time.

      Good luck.

since you are visiting family, I recommend you saving yourself the TSA headache, especially over the holidays and just ship the guns to yourself.
if you insist on flying with them, I recommend calling the airline to verify the procedure.

once in CA - pretty much just locked container, nothing over 10 and no threaded barrel, is pretty much all you really have to worry about.

Also, you might want to check out the ammo situation before new years. I know some stores/cities ban the sale of ammo in the period before new years.

Additionally, please note that California has two different laws against concealed carry. We prohibit concealed carry on the person. That law works just like other states. We also make it illegal to carry concealed in a vehicle. That one catches a lot of out-of-staters by surprise. You need a locked case. The law excludes the utility compartment and glove box from being used as the locked case.

A first time offense for CCW without a license, or for carrying a loaded weapon, where the weapon is not registered in the California DOJ system to the person, is a felony. Please be careful.

TSA and airline employees have generally been pretty good regarding firearms.

I don't CC because I'm not 21 for a CHL in Texas yet, so I plan to have it locked for transport.

Is anyone aware of any new laws for 2014?

              Thanks for the advice yall.

Nothing new for 2014 that will affect your visit. Just follow the rules that have been outlined here and you'll be fine.

I've done it a few times now and it's pretty straightforward. First post nailed it.

One thing I would avoid is using a locked case that screams there is a gun inside, as cool as that Pelican case may be. At this point, if you're flying with a locked Pelican case, people know it's got something valuable in it. Guns, camera equipment, electronics, etc. So beware of that and pick something that is secure as well as discreet.

I was planning on having a small locked case and then packing that small case into my suitcase. I think that should be fine, right?

According to TSA regs it has to be a hard sided case and they put their little tag on it which indicates it's a checked firearm. But you should be able to put it all into your checked bag and have them stick that tag on the suitcase.

Is it legal for someone under 21 to possess a handgun in CA?

I know that persons under 21 can't purchase one, but can they possess one when they are under 21?

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

This just has bad idea written all over it.

Your plan may be legal, but its ill advised.

California cop+kid under 21+pistols in an airport=???. Too much to go wrong and mess up your holiday (and possibly a lot more).

Go shoot in Texas when you get home.
