IMO go with an OWB belt loop holster...I would not run a paddle.

When going to the range or desert shooting I use the Safariland ALS paddle holster which is great since it's secured in place. But I'm not under stress when drawing and it's just fun time on the range so not doing any "tactical" or speed draws.

So I was thinking that since I'll be under stress at the class, if there would be a better holster for class use? One without any locking mechanism? Or keep the Safariland ALS and just train with it?

      Thanks.

All my comp holsters are safari lands. With the lining. They work great and IMO treat your pistol nicer with the lining.
None of mine have a lock. I prefer friction fit.

Plus they are a local so cal company.

IME, the ALS holster you have is one of the BEST range holsters on the market.

Fast quick draw, fully covered trigger guard, retention with ease of release

If it's secure and comfortable on you with the paddle, there are no issues with you continuing to use it.

I use it with the belt holster attachment personally (should have come with the 78, the 77 comes with only the belt attachment) instead of the paddle because I hate paddles in general with this one being one of the worst IMO.

I think it's FAR faster than kydex. Running a timer, 4 out of 4 shooters were faster with it than kydex (3 of them owned their kydex holsters)

for range, you can try other holsters, but you'll likely end up coming back to this one.

I like ALS only holsters over ALS + SLS, as occasionally, if you don't push the hood all the way forward, your draw gets hung up a a slows it a LOT

the ALS is as close to perfection as I've used for a retention system

PM me if you want a rec for concealed carry holsters

The kydex holster that comes with the XD will work as well.

The main thing is to have a holster that is made of Kydex or some type of plastic material and not leather or nylon. And you have that covered.
I did a class with "Uncle Mike" nylon...never ever again. Atomic Dog kydex is perfect for my situation and training.
