what makes the 1911 so special?

I'm new to the firearms scene so please excuse my ignorance. Can anyone explain what makes the 1911 handgun so sought after. I guess I want to know what advantages it has over standard semi auto handguns such as a glock or springfield etc.... are they more reliable, built to last longer?

classic, all metal, 45 frame goodness, comparing them to modern tuperware blasters is just like comparing apples and oranges. they are both good for different reasons and satisfy different taste.

they just feel right.

sure you can get great trigger jobs of them.
there is the quality & workmanship that can be had with a nice custom 1911 that can't be found on any other.
there is the .45 vs all others argument
there is the simplicity of it as well.
it has great ergonomics.
they point naturally
you could argue that at over 100 years old it is still the standard by which all others are judged....

but to me.
It just feels right in the hand

at the time it was created there were no better easily gunsmithable gun
it just took off much like the ar-15 the average layman could replace

anything needing to be replaced unlike a revolver or mauser

I have several guns that I like certain aspects of better than 1911's, but I have yet to fire a gun I like better than a 1911.

Go to a place that rents and shoot the heck out of everything. Then go and try a 1911. You may, or may not feel impressed. Most people love the feel.

Not to mention they are drop dead sexy!
