Looking for a .44 mag

I have a 629 that I have owned for a long time, and it's been a great gun.

My new Lipsey's 3.75" Ruger stainless Bisley Blackhawk... a Lipsey's limited edition.

Shorter 44Mags are better off with faster burning powders.

They also are great with hotter 44Spl ammo.

I have a model 29 in the 8 3/8" barrel but for your purposes...and mine I would go with the 629.... Well under a grand and fun to shoot...

For bear I'd think the double action is better. You don't have time to coco the hammer when a bear is coming at you. And with a speed loader you can reload while running for your life.

For bear consider some lever rifle maybe, if you shoot it empty you will still be left with a club!

But of course get some bear spray first, use the gun if it doesn't work!

In addition to my SRH Alaskan revolver, I also have a Chiappa 1892 Alaskan Scout (http://www.chiappafirearms.com/product/2451) in .44 magnum. It's a takedown model so it's compact and easy to store. Skinner Sights also makes a great folding case it fits into perfectly along with a knife and a box of ammo.

DA - Ruger Redhawk in 5-1/2 barrel. (the 4" barrel is tough to find)
SA - Ruger Super Blackhawk in 4-5/8" barrel.

The single action Super Blackhawk retails for over $200 less than the Redhawk and is easier to find. Single action is also exempt on the roster.

I love mine. I wish it were also available in 45Colt and 357Mag, would buy those as well.

My dream is still the Alaskan. It was actually not bad at all to shoot, and I was more accurate with it even out to 20yds than I was with my Glock. I was splitting cards on edge at 15yds which out of a stubby was pretty good for my first time behind the trigger. I love that gun.

Funny you mention the Chiappa. Big 5 has a Rossi 20" .44 Magnum lever action for sale atm for $479. Seems like a nice gun to have handy. Can't go wrong with a .44 lever.

If you want the 44 mag I totally agree with all the people recommending the Ruger super Redhawk with either the 4" or 6" barrel. Personally I would go with a Glock 20sf with a 6 inch extended barrel and some Underwood 220 grain hard cast bullets. Yes you will be sacrificing some power but 11-16 rounds of 10mm (depending on where you will be using it) is much more desirable to me than being limited to 5-6 rounds. Also an auto pistol is much faster to reload on the run. I'm not a Glock fan boy but the reputation of the 10mm is quite impressive. Its at least worth thinking about.

I have a Ruger SBH in 7.5" and it was not expensive. It is single action - which is fine. But many unless you get some decent grips, you are in for some pain. I injured my trigger finger with factory loads until I got huge Hogue grips for this gun. But man is that 44 mag fun.

A great reload round, like filling a chapstick container... And no, I don't load it for softer recoil - why ? This handgun has the punch of rifles. I've shot 45Colt, and others at stationary targets and they don't penetrate like the 44 (or rifles).

As to the other folks suggestions above, I have no argument with. But I'm pretty happy with the Ruger SuperBlackHawk - Single Action is a love it or hate it thing.

If I was to use it for hunting - I'd definitely think about the S&W or Ruger Redhawks. But it will probably double your cost for a DA revolver...

In 44 mag my vote would go to the Ruger Bisley Blackhawk mentioned above. I have a 4" and 8 3/8" model 29 plus the Ruger Bisley. The Model 29is a great gun, but for walking around in bear country the Bisley is just the ticket.

That said, here in CA about the worst you come across is a 100 - 200 pound black bear. If handgun size and weight are a consideration you could easily handle the task with a .357 mag; that would give you a lot more gun options.

Maybe you missed the part where OP didn't mention where the cabin is. If its out of state then having a couple 15 round rebuild kits to assemble when he's not in California would be totally reasonable and legal. If its in California then yes the gun can hold 11 rounds. Last I checked 10+1 still equals 11.
