    Looking for a .44 mag

I'm looking to add a shorter barrel .44 mag revolver to my one handgun collection. The only real use is for target practice and taking it to my girlfriends cabin as a "just in case". I usually bring my XD45 but my biggest concern is bear. Last time I was there a bear mauled the tree, it was pretty awesome though, minus the fact it was in the driveway.

Anyway, my budget is less then a grand, but I'm looking for a good revolver, that's on the small side WITH a hammer. Whatcha guys think?

Ruger Super Blackhawk can be had for about $500

Dbl action choices include Ruger Super Redhawk for about $900
Smith has the 629 for about a grand or so I think

However, there have been some pretty sweet Smith Model 29s on the used board here for about $850.

That would be my choice. You can be all Dirty Harry out in the woods sayin' to the bear. "You feel lucky, punk?"

    I have a Super Blackhawk in 7.5" barrel 44mag - I got it used for $500

And a Super Redhawk 7.5" in 454 Casull. I have had this one for some 10+ years so the price is kind of irrelevant

Barrels shorter than this with heavy loads are a handful. Consider yourself forewarned.

I really like the single actions as I almost always shoot from single action anyway. Dbl action is handy on those "oh shyte" situations when you have to get off multiple rounds quickly, and is much faster to reload.

Here is some Revolver Porn for ya!

SRH 454Casull 7.5" with Weigand scope mount, UltraDot Matchdot RDS and stock grip. I actually run this one now with a rubber Hogue Tamer grip - it feels better, even if it doesn't look as good as this one.(don't mind the acp below - it was photobombing me all day ...)

SBH 44mag 7.5" ribbed barrel, jeweled and tuned trigger and hammer and a Badger grip.

For a short barrel .44 mag revolver, I'd suggest the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan.

If you see a 4" Smith Wesson 629/29 or 4" Ruger Redhawk .44 mag or .45 colt buy it on the spot.
Then all you'll need are some +p rounds and a good holster for them thar bears.

          I own several S&W revolvers and would go with a 4" 629.
Taurus makes a 5 shot 4" in stainless that looks interesting but I don't own one.

I have a lot of experience with 44 mag revolvers---I would avoid the little 2 1/2" "Alaskan" DA guns and go with a minimum of 4" barrel---the Ruger Redhawk 4" or a nice used S&W 4" 629 would be ideal. You can shoot 44 Specials for fun and Mags for serious stuff.

My vote would go for a S&W 4" 29-2 or 629. I wish they made more of them in a 5" length since I feel that is ideal. Beware, with a hot load, the 4" barrel will have a football sized fireball or bigger.

Just bought a NIB S&W 629-6 4". I was eyeballing it and the owner of the LSG made an offer I would have been stupid to pass up. He said it had been sitting unsold for too long. Everyone wants semi-autos these days.

How much money do you want to spend?

The most ideal for your situation would be a s&w 629 carry comp. It has a 3 inch barrel with a port and fixed sights (only model with fixed sights) and black powder cylinder chamfered. It is also a performance center, so it has a nice light action.

Another good option is 629 no dash, since it is pinned and recessed. It came in 4, 6 and 8 inch versions.

Both are not on the list but can be brought into the state via single action exemption.

For bear I'd think the double action is better. You don't have time to coco the hammer when a bear is coming at you. And with a speed loader you can reload while running for your life.

For bear consider some lever rifle maybe, if you shoot it empty you will still be left with a club!

But of course get some bear spray first, use the gun if it doesn't work!

I do like the S&W's, but if you want to shoot the hot .44mag loads get the Ruger Alaskan. I picked one up several months ago and I love it.
