Glock mag release question

A friend of mine recently got a Glock 19. We were out shooting it the other night and we both noticed that the mag release seemed to be sticky/squishy, and mags would not easily drop free. Even with a full mag, there was not a postive "click" when pressing the release button.

I've done some searching and I see there is an extended mag release that can be added, but also older non-drop free mags? His is a new Gen 3 with factory 10 rounders.

Is this just a characteristic of Glocks, or is there something up with his? I don't have much experience with Glock. Can someone chime in?

No trolls or fanboy's please, just looking for some info.

What you are experiencing is normal, dropping mags without changing your grip with GEN 1-3 Glocks is difficult for most people, that is most likely the reason Glock extended the mag release on the Gen 4

I have 5 Glocks. 4 gen 3s I replaced the mag release with TANGODOWN - VICKERS EXTENDED MAG RELEASE, problem solved.

If your friend purchased it with the standard plastic sights, I would recommend replacing them.

plastic on plastic does that i wish i could feel a glock made out of the plastic ruger cause that stuff is hard and smooth

Extended magazine release will help. Also there is a metal tension "spring" in there that is probably really stiff because it is brand new. With time and use as you break in the gun it will work more freely. My Washington State Trooper Gen 2 Glock 17 trade-in no longer has that feel to it. God only knows what the round count is on her. But she's well broken in and all the quirks are worked out of her. Ugly as sin and reliable as hell.

Are you using early NFML/non drop free mags? IIRC Glock designed their early mags this way to prevent a full/partially full mag from being released unintentionally if the release button was pressed by accident. The way to identify a early drop free mag is to look at the top rear of the mag just below the feed lips. If it has a "U" grove then it's a NFML/non drop free mag (pic on left. A squared bottom U (FML center and right pic) is a drop free mag.

If it's a new Gen 3 they come with Gen 4 mags and have for a while.
