What's the best way to store pistol and shotgun ammo in the garage? How long can they be in their normal packing in a cabinet in the garage before the environment effects their performance?

Unless you really have problems with moisture, or extreme environmental changes all the time, they can be stored in the garage for a long time.
Ideally you would store them in an airtight container, out of the sun, with dessicants. Make sure you recharge/replace your dessicants!!! -
I store mine in Ammo cans in the garage.
So far the oldest I have shot was 5 years, and had no problems with it.Yes, I am an electrical engineer.

Moisture is the enemy. Air tight ammo cans & you shouldn't have a problem. Some of the old milsurp we shoot spent a lot of time in conex boxes in the tropics. Takes a LOT of heat to damage it."He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.

Ammo can + dessicants are all you should need really. Make sure you keep the cans off the ground/concrete too.Comment

Ammo can last for decades if in sealed ammo cans in a cool dry place. My FIL just pulled out some of his stash of 30 cal for his M1 Garand he's had in a box since the early 60s and it fired, no problem. I have an ammo can of 1971 military hardball match ammo 45acp. Still shooting great. Hopefully it'll last until I get my distinguished badge.Comment

my uncle and i shot some .22lr and .22 mag ammo that he had in a shed for the last 25 years. the boxes just fell apart but the ammo shot great. Some FTFs and FTEs but it's .22 ammo, it happens with brand new ammo.
I store my ammo in ammo cans with desiccant packs that come with new shoes and other items. Never had an issue.sigpic In order to succeed, you can't be afraid of failure.Comment

My dad has stored ammo in his garage cabinets for years and years. It's all fine. Agree with the poster above me. Too much thought. Just place it in the garage. It'll be fine.Comment
