Which 1911?

Hey folks,

I've never owned a 1911, and have only owned Glock handguns so far. I'm thinking about getting my first 1911 Which should I consider? I want a fairly nice, mid-market pistol that won't break the bank, but one that's not a POS either.

Looking at Kimber Pro Carry II now, with a 4" barrel.

If your near reseda turners they received a bunch check of 1911. I saw mid to high end kimber, a springfield a bunch of ria and even paraordance. They range from $600-$1700.

It would help us a bit if you could describe your primary function you want the 1911 to fulfill. Will this be range only , or possible home defense, or ccw ?

The Super Carry pro is nice for a 4" too. Really I like all the Kimbers so maybe go to a store and handle as many as you can. Hard to make a good choice without pawing some of em.

Springfield vs. Kimber....... has been debated over & over for the longest time. Both are probably the most popular 1911's around the $700-$1000 price range, and both have their pro's and con's whether it's the gun itself or the company.

IMO, I like the look and feel of the Kimber Customs more than the Springfield Loaded's, as I've had a few of both in the past. While there are still some pro's with the Springfield that's better than the Kimber, IMO the pro's of the Kimber outweigh those of the Springfield... at least for me.


The 4" Pro models are nice, but there's just something about having that full size 5" 1911. I've had my share of 4" 1911's and 2011's, but always ended up getting rid of them for a full size (had nothing to do with their reliability or the way they shot... they were awesome guns, but just not the classic 5").

Like others have said, go with a 5" in .45. I would pick a Colt or Springfield before a Kimber. But with that being said, finding a Kimber in stock will be a lot easier than finding a Colt or Springfield.

Martin B. Retting in Culver City had a lot of Kimber's available, you may want to pay them a visit.

I'm also in agreement with getting a 5" model.

I have 2 friends with Sigs they seem to like them, and I think they got them in the $1000 range.

Sig (I love mine)/Springfield Armory/Kimber/Ruger/S&W are all good choices on the lower price range

The one I'm in love with is the Kimber Eclipse Custom II, but will be getting it in the more powerful 10mm.
