The reason for case hardened finish ever to be offered was because although everone said the hardened their guns few did, Colt sold them with the case hardened look to prove that they were in fact hardened steel guns. The look caught on and was even copied and faked by non case hardned maufactured guns. Still one of my favorite finishes.

I love case hardening when it is vivid. I like old 1917's but the 90 year old metallurgy bugs me a little. I'm going to shoot mine Monday though probably, might even make it a home defense piece if I grow to trust it more.

I remember where some rugers were prone to lose their CCH looking finishes... IIRC those were mostly Vaqueros.

Ruger "color case" is fake and will wear off if you look at it wrong.

I have the 4" Thunder Ranch version Model 22 in .45 ACP. It shoots very nice and looks great. The only bad thing I can say is those small grip panels allow the gun to pivot up under recoil and smack the heck out of the web of my hand. Painfully so. My buddy shot and said the same thing, "Hey it hurts to shoot this thing!". I replaced the small grip panels with the full sized grips that came stock on my old Model 29 and that cured the smack. I'm looking for an appropriately old-school looking pair of Roper style grips. Hogue rubber grips just aren't right on these guns.
