    9mm 1911 Anyone?

Ok, not a 9mm, 38 Super RIA 1911 are on sale at Turners for $420. With a simple barrel swap, you can have both a 38 Super and 9mm.

I plan to turn mine into a 10mm.

    Get them while they last.

It turns out to be pretty costly though. The 38 Super at Turners will cost you $490 OTD and then you need to add the cost of a barrel about $150, get the sights and beaver tail cut....etc

You don't need a new slide going from 38 super to 9mm but the barrel might have to fitted, either by you if you know how or by a gunsmith. I am not sure about a 10mm since the ejector and extractor position is not the same.

Unless looking for a tack driver, a $60 barrel from Midway or Sarco will work and drop-in just fine. As for fitting, drop-ins will work 90% of the time or generally changing link size will get you rest of the way. If you need to start fitting lugs, then you did not get a drop-in barrel.

The breach face on a 38 Super or 9mm will need to be opened up a bit to fit the 10mm, as for the extractor, it can be adjusted. Ejector position should not vary too far from the 9mm. (The big difference is between 45 and 9mm.) Springs will need to be changed of course for the 10mm. Oh, once it is setup for 10mm, you can then shoot 40 with another barrel change. 9mm will prob still work, but with less reliability.

So for ~ $560 OTD you get a 1911 9mm GI. Compared to the alternatives (if you can find them at min 2x cost) is not that bad.

I really wish RIA made a 1911 9mm in Commander size.

The 10mm ejector is usually the same as 38 Super, 9mm and 40. It depends which slide you use, but Caspian and STI should work. Opening up the breechface will work, but not advisable since it will require tuning the extractor. The 1911's reliability in extracting and ejecting spent cases relies heavily on a tuned extractor. There's a difference in rim diameter between the 9mm and 38 Super. My USPSA Open division guns were initially 38 Supers, but the Supercomp brass provides 100% feeding reliability due to adapting the 9mm rim making it stack better in double stack/hi-cap mags. That said I have extractors tuned for Supercomp and Super.

Just buy a sig 2022 in .40 and a .357 sig drop in barrel. Two guns in one! The same mags hold either cartridge. So no extra purchases. Except for the additional ammo.

I do love me some 1911 though. Especially my EMP.

I think a 40 will work with the 357 Sig.

I think you are right, but I only know for sure about the .40/.357, since that's what I have.

My purpose is not to blast anyone, but merely trying to get more info on this subject. Did you buy a Sig 2022 in 357 Sig then acquired a 9mm conversion barrel, or an original pistol chambered in 9mm with a 357 Sig conversion barrel. If its the later that would mean Sig is using the same breechface size for 9mm and 40.

I'm sorry, I flailed! I do have the 2022 in 40, not 9! My bad! Guess I should have stopped after that last beer!

So, to clarify, you can buy a sig .357 barrel and drop it in a sig 2022 in .40.

Again, I apologize for my dunderheaded post!

Going to 9mm will be very easy.

Just drop in a 9mm barrel.

For the extractor, just take it out and bend it in a bit, replace, shoot and see if it extracts reliably. Repeat above until reliable.
People get needlessly freaked out by the thought of "tuning" extractors. It's almost easier than adjusting the rear sights on most guns.
