I think Glocks are safe. They have three passive safeties linked to in post number eight above, namely, a trigger safety, a firing pin safety, and a drop safety. Bottom line, if you do not pull the trigger, the gun will not fire.

If you are interested in an active safety, you can install a Cominolli thumb safety. http://cominolli.com/product_info.php?products_id=29 They work great.

By the way, if you are interested in a Glock 30, I encourage you to consider a Heckler & Kock USP compact .45, variant 1 (DA/SA, with safety/decocker). http://www.hk-usa.com/civilian_produ...pc_general.asp It is not as chunky as the Glock 30, and has a thumb safety. I prefer the ergonomics of the USP compact to the Glock 30. You can carry it cocked-and-locked, or even decocked-and-locked.

Being new I understand your question but seriously take a class ok , safest thing you can do. Any pistol on the roster is as safe as the user. My wife was so scared to have a gun in the house as something would magically make it go off, best way to get that thought out of your head and train with it. I took her to shoot it a couple times and she loves it! Feels even more safe having it in the house. Once you know how it works and understand SAFTY! It's a great tool and sport to get into. For a couple months now wee go shooting 3 times a weak and it always comes down to SAFTY SAFTY SAFTY. Best of luck and happy shooting.

bottom line is NO the glock is not AS safe as pistol with a manual safety...certain scenarios come to mind like holstering, clothing caught in a glocks trigger can and has caused ND's.

This scenario is very unlikely but has happened, say someone comes up behind you and removes your holstered weapon...the glock is a point and shoot weapon...but if the assailant is not too familiar with guns and safeties and you happen to have something like a 1911 he may try to point and shoot, or have to fumble with the safety giving you time to react

this is ****ing stupid. you are really advocating a 1911 because someone might come up behind you and grab your gun and then they might not know how to operate the safety? is this the kind of **** you think about?

if you wanna play that game then im going to say what if all the redundant safety measures on a pos 1911 cause you to be unable to fire your gun in a life threatening emergency?

what if your hand is broken and you cant press the grip safety in hard enough?

what if the gun fell from a car window and the external safety bent and now you cant get it off safe but theres a gang of cannibal nazi pedophile serial killers running at you? what then?

i bet youd say to yourself "boy i wish i had gotten a glock all those years ago and accepted the risk that someone could come up behind me and take my gun and be able to shoot me bacause there is no safety"

I guess your only hope would be that they kill you before they rape and eat you!

Newguy83 - That was probably the single most funny line I have ever read on CalGuns. I might have to quote you in my sig line!

OP – The question shouldn’t be is a Glock as safe as another gun, because the gun is not what is safe or dangerous, the person handling it is. External safeties on guns just add layers between human error and negligent discharge. Theoretically if you put five external safeties on a gun, you will lower the risk of human error causing a negligent discharge, but do you want to have to turn off five safeties before the gun is ready to fire in an emergency?

So the question you should be asking yourself is, how many layers of protection do I want between me and a negligent discharge and how many steps am I willing to go through to make the gun ready to fire? That is a personal question that does not have a right or wrong answer. When you find the balance you are comfortable with, you will have the answer that is right for you.

Right now I have my beretta m9 with a magazine in it, safety off, however i dont have one in the chamber.

I just think carrying a glock with one in the chamber and in the holster, a piece of shirt could get caught in there, in that case it could blow off your leg.

I just like the look and feel of the glock however, I'm just trying to find out if its for me or not. Thanks for the advice@!

You just answered your own question. If you are not comfortable with a Glock, get something else. There are plenty of reliable, high quality guns available of which Glock is just one of.

sig p226 . only because I just got one after trying out all sorts of pistols it doesn't have a safety either. Well I guess if you want to consider a 10lb trigger pull a safety.
                      Have a good day!

This I've only heard of glocks being dangerous because of the way the particular person is handling them, the only examples that I read about was about people who carry glocks, load a round in the chamber before they holster the firearm and then do not practice proper safety procedures ie: don't put your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot.

When I went on the hunt for a plastic gun I rented a lot of them and shot them several times. I ended up with the M&P 45 with a thumb safety mostly because it felt the most like a 1911, which is what I learned to shoot with 30 years ago. I have over 10k rounds through it now and have used it for competitions and I have been very happy with it.

Go to a range and rent a bunch of different guns, and then buy the one you like the best.

+1 for M&P. I have two M&P40s with the thumb safety, one for me and one for the wife. I carry it OC Condition 1 all the time when we're out hiking.
I've never seen an American flag burned at a gun show.

How about condition 0? Isn't that, one in the chamber, safety off, fully cocked and ready to rock?

There is a G30 sitting in my safe. It hasn't gone off in a couple of weeks.
