I agree that $549 is a reasonable price for a Gen 3. $599 seems to be the going rate for a Gen 4.

I just picked up Gen4's in the flavors or G21, G23, and G27. I have Gen3's in G22, G27 and Gen2's G21 and G23.

I have various triggers in these and kept the Gen4's stock except 3.5# Ghost. Don't like extended slide releases. Generally do have extended mag releases. I don't use aftermarket recoil things.

I like the Gen4 grips quite a bit. I use the large size for my G23 and G27 and it fills my hand nicely. I use the medium size for my G21 and it's more comfortable than my Gen2 G21+Hogue. I also like the Gen4's grip texture. So ergonomics are much better with the Gen4 IMO. Recoil is better managed with the Gen4 G21 and G23. I can't really tell any difference between my G27's. That would lead me to believe the Gen4 has some edge because my Gen3 is ported. However the Gen3 already has a 2-stage recoil spring, so there might not be much difference.

I like the large mag release buttons on the Gen4's. The slide finish is also different on the Gen4's. Glock finish in general is already very durable, but the Gen4 finish seems a rougher and tougher. I prefer it. Overall, I think the Gen4's are worth the premium over other models. Not worth $1k or something like that. But $50-100, sure. Plus SSE might be going bye-bye soon, so they may become even harder to get ahold of in the Golden State.

The larger mag release on the gen 4 makes it a no brainer for me. I also like the grip texture better on the gen 4.

I really think that an extra $50 bucks is worth it for a GEN4. The grip is much better for my hands; love the mag release and the finish is nice. I expect some political problems with SSE in the future and I can see the day when Gen4s become scarce. Hope I am wrong.....

$549 for a new Glock isn't bad. With a disount, I paid less than $500 otd for a BNIB G19. I had a GEN4 G17, wasn't impressed with it. The grip texture was alright, but I prefer my Gen3 with Talon Grips.

My LGS has (or recently had) GLock 17s and 19's (and several other models) for $499, which is their regular price. They were only slightly higher for their 20's and 36's.

I've purchased my last 4 guns from them. I shop around just as a matter of principle, but have yet to find a better price at another store on handguns. They're well priced on sporting rifle components, too.

Much more than meets the eye... I prefer the Gen 4 ergonomics and precision/accuracy personally.
