    how do i register this??

my buddy has a s&w .357 mag that has stamped on the barrel highway patrolman. the pistol is in need of a little resto work and he is going to give it to me i had a friend run the numbers through the agency he belongs to and its all clean. but i would feel kind of odd walking into a place and saying "I just got this and want it in my name". any suggestions of what to do?

have to go through a dealer and wait the full 10 days unless your buddy also happens to be your father/mother/grandfather/grandmother

You and your buddy go to an FFL and complete a Private Party Transfer. It's the only legal way of doing it.

The law doesn't require guns be registered per se, it only requires that certain procedures be followed for transferring or importing guns. Failure to follow the procedures when transferring is a crime. Because your friend is not dead and not your parent/grandparent/son/grandson, and this is not a C&R handgun acquired out of state on a C&R license, you need to do a Private Party Transfer (PPT).

Your friend and you need to go to an FFL (a gun store) with the gun, and tell them he is doing a Private Party Transfer of the gun to you. You will need to pay $35, and probably pay for a new lock to throw away. You will both need to bring your CA ID or Drivers License. You will also need a Handgun Safety Certificate (you can get that from the FFL after taking a very easy multiple choice test and paying $25) and secondary proof of residence (recent utility bill, unexpired car registration, deed, lease, etc.) that shows your name and address. You will need to wait 10 days, and then you can pick the gun up from the FFL.

You need to do this quickly as you cannot have possession of the handgun (absent an unusual exception) for more than 30 days as a legal loan of a firearm (as opposed to an illegal transfer).

The above does not constitute legal advice. I am not your lawyer.

No - because if it wasn't DROS'ed he would have acquired it illegally.

well the handgun is not in his name either is the problem.he lived next door to this 70 yr old man and he was going into some sort of assisted living and gave the pistol to my friend. it has since sat around for 5 more years and my friend just bought a glock21 and doesnt even want to bother with it now.Im thinking its clean+free but... how much trouble will it be to register? im not willing to get in trouble i.e. arrested etc.etc. over a handgun i will just leave it up to him at that point! so not realy sure which way to go.

"Legally", you need to follow the procedures noted above. No one will tell you otherwise.

Of course, there is another way. It would involve both of you moving to another state like AZ or NV and becoming legal residents of that state. Then, you could just transfer it with a hand shake. Since we all know that it not going to happen, he must take it to your local FFL and PPT it with you.

Ok I'll step in here and save the day; I will take it upon myself to relieve you of this problem and take this '.357 Magum ' that happens to be marked 'Highway Patrolman' on the barrel, off your hands for a nominal fee.

*sigh* How come no one ever gives me neat-o keen Smith&Wesson N-frames....

If you do not transfer this gun through a dealer, you are committing a crime.
