I recalled that anecdote from memory on an article from a professional 1911 gunsmith light years beyond my skill level. The primary reason the author disliked the practice is due to how the hammer is cut to the sear, the hooks get jarred by the slide slamming home without a round to cushion the action. The disconnector and all the parts get bounced around when the gun slams into battery without a round in the chamber. Once the edges get worn off enough, hello hammer follow and its friend full auto fire.
As I recall, this was not a problem "back in the day" when forged parts were used inside and out, but some current production 1911s are made with "surface hardened" parts where only the outside surface is wear resistant. Once the outside surface is worn or chipped away , the soft internal metal is exposed to wear and weapon failure is not long coming afterwards. The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self reliant people will be.

The 1911 may have been in wars for 100 years, but Masetro Bartolomeo Beretta was arming the world 400 years before John Browning was ever a wet dream.Comment

Is letting the slide slam home on an empty chamber bad for my pistol?
Basically, yes it is. While an occasional or accidental occurrence may not damage ones pistol the repeated act of the slide slamming closed on an empty chamber can have an adverse effect on the pistol’s hammer and sear geometry as well as cause battering between the frame, slide stop, and barrel feet. Whenever possible ease the slide home when not chambering a round.WTS all BNIB: Colt S70 Repro, HK45c, Gen4 G19Comment

Ahhhh.. I have plenty of good input round these parts, that it doesn't hurt to laugh a little.
And Mom's doing fine; I just changed her embalming fluid, propped her up in a more sexy position, and brushed away the flies. It really gets musty down here in the basement if I don't change her fluids on a timely basis.-----------------------------------------------

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?Comment

Also remember with a 1911 that you load the rounds from the magazine only. Don't rack the slide, then with the breach open drop one round in the barrel and release the slide. The internal extractor will be stressed and could "possibly break"
. So unless you are in a fight or die situation with no more loaded mags and only one round between you and death, don't do it
OK, this is a little over the top, but there is truth in this recommendation.
But for just handling the gun and practicing loading and unloading with snap caps, use the magazine.
This practice is apparently fine in the combat pistols (yes, I know the 1911 was the military pistol or 70+ years) like Glocks, Sigs, Etc with external extractors. Many people see this as a great feature in some semi-autos and do not know to avoid this in a 1911.Comment
