There is a thin Walther, the PPS, that gets good marks but is also on the pricey side as is the Kimber Solo. As things stand, the Shield looks like the best bet to me if you feel the need for a small automatic.

In terms of carry with your J-frame, you might want to look into an IWB at about a 15 degree angle just behind the hip. Usually less printing than a J-frame in the pocket and easy to hide under a loose shirt.

The M&P Shield seems to be the best overall gun according to most people I have met who own and shoot the gun regularly. They say that it needs some work to get it to be where they want it to be so it tends to be on the pricey side once its good to go. The Walther PPS is also a great slim gun and the trigger is probably the best one you can get with a striker fired gun. Only thing is it doesn't have much options for aftermarket stuff.

I want to avoid .380 due to increased ammo costs
If I was looking for a DEDICATED pocket gun then .380 would be a contender but I feel my jframe is a good pocket gun

I am very thin 5'4 and about 100lbs. I have no problem concealing a M&P 9C with a Tuckers Gun Leather "The Answer" IWB holster. Its my daily carry at work. 8+ hours 6 days a week. It's quite comfy, if the M&P was just a tad lighter it would be perfect. Yea theres other compacts smaller, but you also sacrifice round count. With the M&P you get 10+1 and thats a factor well worth it in my book. Especially with these Gang Bangers running around with Glocks and 30 round mags around here.

On a side note. I wear the holster at about the 4 o'clock position and like I said I have no complaints about comfort

I think you and I have very similar body types. I'm just a little shorter at 5'10, but I'm 140ish lbs and pretty damn skinny thickness wise.

I can get away with a Glock 27 even with tighter shirts. It really depends on how you carry, but going to a single stack 9mm (ideally entire thickness under 1" like I think almost all single stack 9s are besides the Sig P239) would make it so easy to carry.

But I have found it depends on how I carry, thickness of the gun, and grip length.

If I am going to be moving stuff around, squating down, etc. I have found my glock is not even noticeable at about the 3-3:30 position. This is where grip length comes into play. I can get away with it with a baby glock, but not my glock 19 because the butt sticks out too far.

If I'm just going to be sitting at a desk the entire day, the gun is much more concealable at the 4:30-5ish position (not quite small of back carry though). The only time I think about it is when I get up and sit down.
The problem with this position for me is when I squat or do anything, if I do not keep my back absolutely 100% upright, the gun just comes away from the body and sticks out like crazy.

I've tried appendix carry and while it seems the most comfortable, it looks like I stuck a log in my belt. I doubt there would be issues carrying a single stack 9mm there, though.

This is all just my experience though.

EDIT: I want to clarify my appendix carry experience. If I where an actual appendix carry holster, then it looks like a log. I have one of these (http://www.ozarksholstercompany.com/shop/guardglove/) for my glock 27, and it still bulges, but no where near as noticeable as with different holsters. So that is why I say a single stack 9mm would work perfectly fine for me.

Kahr k9 or MK9. I think the all stainless steel Kahrs are worlds better than the poly versions. They weigh more but the build quality is much better.

I've got a Kel-Tec PF-9 and I love it. Super easy to conceal. Any gun that small and skinny sucks to shoot though.

                          Sig P6 all the way...

                          I love my Sig P6:

It's a slim & accurate single stack 9mm pistol. Plus, it handles defensive loads without any issues. You can still find them on CalGuns, SARCO, AIM Surplus, GunBroker, AuctionArms, etc. I had mine restored to new condition by the OC Gunsmith and then refinished by Mac's Shootin' Irons. Good luck. Cheers! --1911ShooterPhil
