So out of curiosity, why Harp Custom? There are plenty known smiths you could have gotten a build from for that price range. They also only work on guns...

Any updates? I just sent Troy an order and intial payment for a 5" build and 2holsters (1 iwb, 1 owb). Your "year" is about half over and mine is just begining. The good news is that I'm no longer a Cal res and won't have as many hoops to jump through.

Also, just out of curiosity, what did you base your decision on when choosing a basically unknown custom builder from BFE Kansas to build a $4K gun? I grew up (so to speak) about 45 minutes from Troy's shop, so please be kind with the Dorthy & Toto jokes.
It looks like one year was optimistic on my part and I would be surprised if it's done by June, but I'm in no rush.

I went with Troy because he's an unknown builder.

The 1911 is a tried and true system. There are not a million moving parts in the core design. It really comes down to what materials are used and how skilled the builder is in fitting them. After watching his videos and seeing just how artistic he can be, it was a no brainer for me.

How many times in your life are you given the chance to turn a vision into a reality? Yes, it's a gamble to agree to spend 4k on anything sight unseen.. but somethings are worth the risk.

Very true, but for every well known smith that everyone wants to build their gun there was once just a guy trying to prove he was talented.

          Thanks for the update

Thanks for the update. I don't expect to hear anything from Troy until well after the new year. I tried to schedule a visit while I was in Kansas for a hunting trip, but he said he slammed in the run-up to Christmas and didn't have any time to meet.

I'd just like to add that every 'smith has a style. Even if they build a gun to "your specification" their style will show through. Find the guy who makes guns the way you like and the details basically take care of themselves. My $0.02 YMMV

              Laythor,

I sent Troy $1800.00 in January 2013 for a build. I was wondering if you got yours and how it turned out.

                Hi, Matt (Laythor)

I hadn't seen your email reply back yet after our phone call tonight... so I sent you two additional emails and one last night that had the final invoice and payment information to the email address we have been corresponding from and that same email you confirmed with me tonight...Thanks!!

It was great talking with you tonight (Sunday) I am glad I was able to get ahold of you, after a few phone calls and emails during the last week and this weekend, I was worried something had happened to you since we hadn't spoken since October 15 and I mentioned I was working on getting it done before the end of the year.

Anyway, I could tell by your voice that you were excited to know that the pistol is done and ready for the final payment balance due and I will need your FFL to email me a copy of their license.

We have 10 days before the SSE goes away so it should be no problem since you mentioned you would be sending the balance due via overnight or 2nd day air. It will have time to clear and I can ship the pistol overnight or 2nd day air and have it to you in plenty of time. I appreciate you sending the payment promptly so that we can make the deadline so you don't lose your downpayment.

I wish you a blessed holiday and Merry Christmas to you, Matt. I will send you a pm as well. As I mentioned please call with any questions tomorrow.

                Sincerely,
                Troy Harp

                  Harp Custom 1911 Pistols Review

Matt. Here are some photos of your custom 1911 pistols that was shipped overnight and will be delivered to your dealer on the 29th of December.

I will email you the larger versions of the photos. Have a blessed night.

Of course to meet the CA SSE law the pistol was fitted and shipped with a 7" barrel and of which the pistol had an OAL of 10.75" and a 1-shot fixed magazine. I will likely post photos of that as well.

As always, please feel free to call with any questions.

                  Sincerely,
                  Troy Harp

That is one beautiful 1911, quite a great Christmas present!
