Walther P99 vs Glock17

Which P99 variant had a decocker that would render the gun inoperable? Man, what a POS.

Whoever thought of that should be shot.

That said, I doubt many people have full capacity mags for the P99 pre-2000, so that makes the choice easy for me.

As you can see, you've asked a question of near religious proportions, and everyone is going to defend their individual "faith". Your best bet is to go shoot them both at a range, and decide which one you like.

As for me, first time I shot a P99 was a while back when I was not a very experienced shooter, and rented one at a range. After the first round, I looked at the target, and a hole through the "X"... I was like, holy cr*p! I found it to be incredible accurate for me. But you may like the Glock better, so try it out. Besides, "research" on the line is half the fun!

Ah, yes..... the eternal argument of "GLOCK vs ANYTHING ELSE". It never ends once it gets started.

I will admit to being personally biased towards Glocks (particularly the 10mm species) but that's just personal preference. They tend to fit my requirements.

When asked, I usually will gravitate towards Glocks in general..... but usually end up with the whole "individual choice" comments. Not everyone can (or wants to) shoot the same gun as everybody else.

My answer to the original poster (Esc) would be to head out to a range and shoot a few hundred rounds through both before you make a decision to buy. You might save a few bucks in the long run.

I think that this ^ is almost a universal answer for anyone who comes in asking "Which gun should I get?".

It's as much an individual decision as blondes, brunettes or redheads.....

i have shot the glock 17 and i will be going to the range today to fire the p99...
Has anyone had any issues about either of these guns (ie jamming, pet peeves )

I have a Glock 17, and I've found it super-accurate. The only issue I've had with it was when I closed the slide on a Federal hollow-point while investigating a suspicious noise in the garage (we have several motorcycles in there, so I keep an ear out), and the slide didn't lock all the way forward. Now I just hit the slide release and it's all good

I picked up a 2003-vintage P990 9mm (which is the DAO version of the P99) that never found a home a few weeks back...Works great, have 410rds through it as of today. Very easy to strip and clean (especially because I don't have to deal with the decocker thing, less to take apart - I get the frame, the recoil assembly, and the slide for regular cleaning). This is my first pistol and I love it.

One of my coworkers has a G17 which I have shot several times including earlier today. It's a nice weapon but doesn't point naturally for me.

Happy P-99 owner here. I use the small backstrap. I have short fingers and the glocks are less comfortable. Hit the range and fling some lead. Buy the one that's most comfortable. Anybody want to offer to go to the range with him to let him try yours on for size?

I don't hate Glocks, but I wouldn't buy one either. I don't like the angle of the grip, I don't like the boxy, toy-like grip and the triggers are... well, unique to Glocks.

P99 for me, thanks.


P.S., the new ones look like toys, get the older, pre-2005 models that actually look like firearms.

Not sure what you mean about the new ones looking like toys but the typical distinction is between the pre-and post-2004 models. That was when the trigger guard was changed, and the rail...At least according to the P99 FAQ.

The trigger guard and serrations were changed at the end of 2004, and I believe the "new" ones are 2005 and newer. The trigger guard and serrations were iconic Walther design cues (particularly the serrations), and they changed both, much to my dismay.

EDIT: Yes, and the Glock is really accurate, but I'm more accurate with my P99, which also is more comfortable feeling for me to shoot.

That's a key point there - all other things being equal, you'll be more accurate with a gun that fits your hand, than with one that might be a bit more accurate but that doesn't fit your hand.

Personally, I really like the P99, and it's super comfy in my hand, except for the shape of the trigger. The leading edge of the base of the trigger dug into my finger during shooting, becoming painful during a range session.

So, I went with the G19.

You were shooting an old P99 then because the 2004+ models don't have that hump in the trigger guard. What's funny is my P990 has that hump and my fingers never come close to it. And I'm a big guy. I guess there are people with much bigger fingers out there than mine though...
