Eh, get a nice used one, a Model 29-2 or earlier (or a C&R pre-29). While later models have a few improvements for shooting heavy loads the older ones are nicer and much more collectible/better investments.
Most people don't shoot tons of heavy loads through their 29's; hot 44 special equivalent loads are just fine as a steady diet for the earlier 29's. My favorite is the 6.5" blued pre-29 with the early cokebottle grips.

I am in the same boat. Always wanted a model 29. My local gun store had a 29-2 in great conditon for $550. Someone picked it up before I could get my hands on it. Looks like I may go for a new 29 or a les Baer I can't decide at the moment!Comment

Get a house wtf get your priorities in order. You will get all the toys you ever wanted later in life! It's called retirement!Comment

Get the Model 29. After you get the house the payments and upkeep will suck your wallet dry, so get the Smith beforehand. The third handgun I bought was a used Model 29 with a great trigger job. That was when they were hard to find and artificially jacked up because of the Dirty Harry movies. I handloaded for it, and as mentioned above, I mostly shot lead bullets loaded to about Special power. I loved shooting that thing and stupidly sold it to buy something else after just a few years.
I came to regret it, and ended up picking up another one several years later when they came on sale:

Gotta get it. I've been wanting one for about 5 yrs now. I bought a house, which I don't regret, and now the taxes and upkeep is taking away my time and money from getting one. Ugh, I'll get one one day. 29-10 6.5" blued with altamont grips is on my dream list.Comment
