I've shot an XD9 Tactical in IDPA and IPSC for the past several years. I LOVE the gun. As for reliability...15,000 rounds through the pipe, two failures to extract. Performance...well, I won my class at the IDPA National Championships with it last October (not to mention the CDP National Champion at that match was shooting an XD45 Tactical).

As for problems with then when dirty, I used to clean mine after every match. Now, I don't feel the need because I have run mine through as many as three matches without cleaning and have had no performance issues.

Some people prefer the feel of the Tactical (me!), and some like the Service model. Try renting both and see how they feel when you shoot.

    Get it. You'll love it.

I have a 9mm 4" service model duo-tone. I love it! Bought it in February and have put about 2k round through it with no FTF or FTEs. I have had a problem with slide failing to lock back after the last shot but that's probably due to me limp wristing it rather than a problem with the pistol.

In hindsight, I wish I had purchased the 5" tactical model for more inherent accuracy...in fact I might just pick one up and have one of each...

      Go buy one already!

I kind of dismissed the XD at 1st, but I am so close to picking up an XD45 now. I have herd nothing but positive comments and the one I have held and checked out, all seem to be of high quality.
I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

I can almost guarantee that one of your thumbs is lightly touching the slide release lever when you shoot. This is a common problem, especially if you use the "thumbs forward" competition style of gripping the gun. I had the similar problem until I trained myself to keep my thumb completely away from that lever.

Actually, at anything less that 50 yards, there really isn't a difference in accuracy between the models. What you get with the Tactical is a longer sight plane (which helps with keeping a more-precise sight picture), and a different center of balance in the gun. Personally, I love the feel of the Tactical (and prefer it over the Service), but there are people who feel the reverse. That is why it is really important to shoot them both before making a decision.

Or as you said...one of each!

Thanks everyone for the input. I will be going to get one this week. Should be a nice addition to my safe.

I have an XD40 Service and have had zero hiccups and I like the grip angle. To me it holds like a 1911. I've had mine since 2003.

I've shot them. The barrel seems to sit a little higher (vs a Glock or similar) so the recoil was a little weird but overall I liked the gun. The ones I were shooting were as accurate as I was and never misfired. I think the max capacity (in the free states) is 12 rounds, or at least thats what I was told by the owner. If I were given one I wouldn't sell it, but its not a gun I would probably go buy for myself.

I'll pay closer attention to my thumb placement when I go to the range next - thanks for the heads up!

I have an XD 9mm subcompact. I live in Pennsylvania right now and mine came with a 10 round magazine and a 16 round magazine. I imagine I will be sending my 16 round mag to stay at my dad's in Portland before I move to LA. I have run 1500 rounds through it and never had an issue. I would be more then happy to own two or three of them.
