    Questions on buying a Python

I want to say first this is not a wtb thread, rather a procedural question.
I have not posted in some amount of time because of some health issues and a 3 year home search. I have kept up and write my elected reps on proposed legislation. Now that we have moved closer to family and medical resources (ucsf), I have time to get back into collecting and/or buying useful firearms.
I hope I have not delayed purchasing my dream gun, a blue 357 python nos, or slightly used. I know they have achieved premium status. When I talked to the (new to me) local gun shop the owner updated me that the only approved model is the .38 stainless for a new gun. To buy used it has to be from within state, "old" gun, nos, or consignment. Are private party sales through a ffl still allowed? If I locate an older model I want to by *someplace* can we complete a privaste party sale?
My question is two-fold, first to find out if it's do-able, and second to see if I should trust the dealer I talked with.
ANy elp or coments are welcome.

The blue models are no longer on the roster.

You would need to do a PPT on one in state or have one made SAO roster exempt.

    Consignment counts as a PPT.
    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Or find a 1962 or earlier Python on Gunbroker or similar site and buy it and have it shipped to your local FFL as they would be C&R and therefore roster exempt. Pythons were introduced in 1955.

Please tell me what sao is.
pre-62 is that a cutoff for collectible?
I think the best way would be to locate an in-state consignment or in state personal sale brokered through a ca ffl.
Thank you both for the info. I should have bought one years ago, but family and other obligations took care of that.

If you are retired and have the time and resources, you might try visiting gun shops in your area. Before I started working my second job, I would go to shops within a 30 mile radius of my home and check out what they had. On one of my trips I found this 1964 Python in a very small shop about at the limit of my radius. I had been there enough for them to know me, so I was able to work a bit of a deal on it and it came home with me for $875 OTD. Not really cheap, but a fair price for a 97+% Python

Not cheap? I'll pay you a premium to take it off your hands. How about $1,100?

I paid $1150 for a 1962 vintage Python in similar shape in 2005. Nowadays you'll be lucky if you get to pay double that. You might as well get a Freedom Arms revolver at that point.

Just jailed an Unfired 1985 4" blued Python. I couldn't be happier . Let the wheel gun sickness begin!

Traded my Kriss for it. The Kriss was an awesome gun. But I never shot it. And if I'm gonna have a gun I don't shoot. I'd much rather have a Python!

It is a beauty you have there especially for the price you got it at. I admit that I'm super jealous
