Sig Sauer P220 .45 ACP would be my pick; preference for w german variants.

if you prefer the trigger of the G21 and you have high regard for the Glock platform, it may be the one for you.

I would look for a used P220 at about $600. Save the plastic for 9mm.

          Things to consider.

If this is going to be a "defense" gun, then you want to look at the gun's ergonomics and how easy it is to use the various controls.

For instance the Sigs are great shooting guns, but the slide stop is in a different location than many other guns and vice versa.

I don't want a gun that I have to shoot double action for the first shot and single action for the rest and for me a DAO is not an acceptable option.

Many guns have crappy triggers from the factor, but have reasonable cost drop in fixes which is something you may want to consider.

I own many pistols and the ones I enjoy shooting most are the following.

          1. Colt 45
          2. HK USP 45
          3. CZ 75 in 9mm.
          4. Sig Sauer, 40 cal. (I just cock hammer and shoot single action only). Not a defense gun since controls different than other guns, but still fun gun to shoot.

I just put a CZ in 45 cal in jail, stock the gun feels great in my hand, has great balance and the trigger pull isn't bad. You may want to check one of those out if you get a chance.

Been eyeing a M&P in 45, but now they are gone. Some people have complained about the triggers, but there are aftermarket triggers that have seemed to fix the problem.

If you got the cash, there is no better 1911 than a wilson combat. But since its not what your looking for, I would go 4th gen glock, or a m&p pro (make sure its a pro) and get an apex trigger.

                1. SA XDM .45 4.5in, standard sights, 2mags(approx $600, can be bought asap online, plus all the transfer fees)
                2. Sig P220, Full Size, nights sights, 3 mags (approx $780, long wait time)
                3. Glock 21 4gen, 3 mags ($400, extra for night sights, 2-4 month wait time, but cheapest one)
                4. S&W M&P 45, (haven't really researched it yet)
                5. Sig P220 carry, night sights, 3 mags (approx $780, can be bought asap locally, but not looking for a compact)
                5.???

any other help on what I should choose would be appreciated. Also, I'm not a big fan of sigs da/sa trigger. I've had a da/sa and dak from sig, the DAK is decent. As far as an XDM and M&P, I really have no experience on those. As far as the glock, I been used to that trigger for some time now and prefer it.
You've more or less answered your own question. You don't like DA/SA, which to me means you don't/won't train with it. DA/SA takes longer to master and more work to keep up. And you don't much care for DAK either, so the Sigs are out. You don't want a 1911, so that's out. HK45/C are excellent firearms, but unless you're going to run LEM, those are out as well. Leaves you with M&P, XD/M and Glock. I recommend you shoot the M&P and an XD or XDM before you decide. I've shot a couple of XD pistols and M&Ps in 9mm, .40 and .45. I think the .45 M&P is the best of the M&P series. My impression was a very accurate gun with a crap trigger. So put an Apex trigger kit in and rock on. The two XD guns I shot were fine. Accurate and seemed to be reliable. As I said, fine. You already like the Glock trigger. Since you're willing to jump through the hoops to get an XDM, why not consider a Glock 21, Gen 4 as well.

The three left are all polymer, SF guns; so shoot them all, do your reasearch on the ones you like and select one.

Save up a bit more money and get a HK 45C---my favorite carry 45! Life is short, get the good stuff...

If you need something inexpensive until you can get a 1911 you can't go wrong with the XD. Also check out the ruger p345 (not too bad for the price)

P220, check the marketplace, or www.sigforum.com classified, you can easily get a P220 for around $600 used. You saw a P220 SAO like the one a have on the SigForum last week or so...

If u want a gun that jams then buy a 1911.. haha. If u want plastic go with Glock 9mm. All in for Sig 220 STAINLESS STEEL. German made frame with rail to Attach a light. That is the one for HD RIGHT NOW! RIGHT HERE!

I LOVE the Sig P220 Carry, what a sexy bi*ch! The P220 is really nice too, has a great feel. I have big hands so there are a lot of smaller pistols that feel kinda funny to me, but for a .45 I would either get a P220 Carry or a 1911

I think you would like the Glock 30 or 30 SF. It is reliable and accurate for about $600. perfect for HD and the range.

i have 2 1911's, 1 para 14-45, and 2 m&p45's, (one a compact). never thought i would get a "plastic" gun. the m&p felt, and looked better that the other poly's, and shoots just fine. i have only added trijicon sights to them.
That may be a CG first!
