My first (and only) handgun so far is the glock 21. My wife who has never shot a gun in her life can shoot my big .45 so I would recommend that. You can also not go wrong with 9mm either. I would skip .40 and get either a 9mm or .45 in any of those brands/models. Go handle them at your range and fire the ones you like. I gurantee 99% of ranges have all of those guns I listed to rent. Good luck!

      Just my thoughts:

If you buy a 1911, make sure it's a quality one. They can be a bit more finiky than other guns. That's a general comment. I have no experience or knowledge of Amscor.

Note that many feel a 1911 is more of an "experts" gun. I don't know if that's true or not. However a 1911 does require a bit more maintenance to keep running. It isn't rocket science and nothing that can't be learned if your are inclined and dedicated. If this doesn't sound like it's for you then go with something else.

But if you do get a 1911...I would go with a 45 for my first. The 1911 platform was designed for 45. They can run well on 9 mm...but can be finiky. If you do decide to go 9mm...really do your research on the brand/model.

If you go with the Glock or something else, I'd probably go 9mm. I'm a fan of 9mm for a first handgun. It's much cheaper to shoot which means more practice for you. And I feel the lower recoil is easier to learn on. It's also a solid and proven defensive round with a good quality hollow point. No matter what any internet commandos say.

      Good luck!

1911>Glock, and this is coming from a guy who is selling his 1911 and keeping his Glock...but I live in a free state and can carry a 33 round mag for my G19 if I wanted to...also Glock>Armscor guns, and I have owned 3 different 1911s made by Armscor. If you want a 1911 get, at bare minimum a Springfield, if not something nicer like the Ruger SR1911 or a Sig.

Glad to see there are no internet fights yet, lol

If you just want a straight answer (or should I say opinion) to your question, here's my answer fwiw: Get a Glock 17 for your first handgun.

Now, if I may add, I think you might end up getting a 1911 anyways (as your next gun) as you might end up liking both Glocks and 1911's. For 1911's, .45ACP IMO is better than 9mm.

But before anything else, start shooting them at ranges first. My answer/opinion above is there to provide a direct response to your question, and for the most part, based on my experience as having gone through a similar path. And yes, I own Glocks and 1911's.

Good luck and welcome to CalGuns!

              Hope this helps.

The correct answer is: Get to a shooting range and rent both, as some have already advised in this thread. You'll come out with a clear head. Seriously.

If you're near the SFV we can meet at the target range in Van Nuys and you can shoot mine.

No 1911 short of the best versions that are all worth more than $1000 is worth buying as a first gun. You need reliability. Get a glock 21sf or 30sf.

Get a Glock .40 (22, 23, 27) and then a 9mm conversion barrel and magazine. You can shoot both .40 and 9mm from the same pistol.

I chose the CZ75 over the Glock because of the accuracy. It's apparent you love Glocks, so there is no point getting into a discussion because neither of us will change our views on the subject. In my opinion the appeal of the Glock is it's durability.

Both are very accurate. It all depends on how accurate the Shooter is

good topic. I own a Kimber 1911 and Glock 17 9mm,and they both are great guns.I'd say for a first time buyer get the glock. The ammo is cheaper and easier to find.Glocks are easier to field strip than a 1911.Glocks are more reliable in the sense that you dont have to clean it nearly as often as a 1911.Plus glocks are like $500, a decent 1911 starts at 1000.
