  • first gun purchase -glock17

Finally Turners have the glock 17 on sale for $489. I plan to buy it this friday. This will be my first handgun purchase. I dont have the HSC card, i guess i will take test there on friday.

I do have a few questions. Do you pay for your gun before or after your 10 days waiting period? What do i have to bring with me that day? Does glock come with a gun lock or i have to buy them separately? The case that comes with the pistol, can i use it to transport the gun from home to the range or i have to buy something else? What kind of oil do i need to buy to lube the glock? Is there any other range in Orange County area (714) beside Firing Line in Huntington Beach. I plan to get the one year membership there because it is only 10 minutes away from my house.

Most places require the gun be paid for to do the DROS. I'd call turners and see what their policy is. Glocks come with a CA legal lock so you don't have to worry about that. The case it comes with will be fine for taking it to the range.

I use hoppes #9 oil I apply it per glocks directions. One orange 4 oz. bottle will last a LONG time. I recomend you buy yourself some good patches and some hoppes #9 nitro solvent. The rod and brush that come with your glock will work till you upgrade yourself to better cleaning gear.

I can't help you with SO CA ranges..

edited cus I can't type, or spell worth a hill of beans

I just saw the G17 for sale today also. I've been thinking about shooting in the GSSF competitions and the G17 is perfect. I'm debating getting a G17C though.

At Turners I think I heard someone put down 1/2 the price of the gun for them to do the DROS, the other 1/2 when you pick up the gun. You might be able to put down less, just call and ask.

To do the DROS on a handgun you need to bring your DL, HSC and proof of residency (car registration, utility bill, etc).

For what it is worth, I purchased a Glock 22 and a Mossberg 500 about 10 days ago (sidenote: I get them tomorrow...yeah!) But before my purchase, I had to pass the HSC (simple test), which was $25. I also had to show proof of residence (utility bill is what I used). I then chose the weapon(s) I wanted to purchase, I filled out the necessary paperwork and paid for both weapons in full. I could have put a deposit down on both of them, but instead I paid in full. I told the guys I would be back in 10 days to pick up my weapons. Your experience may vary.

stillbigbac, thanks for the oil recommendation, I need to pick that up tomorrow!

Also if your driver's license does not have your current address printed on it, you need to get the "official" brown cardboard DMV change of address card.

Utility bill needs to be within 90 days of current date.

Not true on the "Brown" address card.

You can purchase a firearm even if your CDL does not show your current address and you do not have a "brown" card.

Your P.O.R. must show the address that will be on the Ca. DROS and the Fed 4473 and must be within the past 90 days.

My CDL does not have my current address on it and I do not have a brown card. I did bring two different utility bills and the seller was able to verify my address. Not sure, but it might really depend on who the seller or selling establishment is.

Indeed this is true (in fact I think this actually depends on what specific type of POR you provide from what I was told by my primary FFL). Sorry... so to be more specific... TURNERS will (most likely) require the brown card! Because of their own internal policies not because of the law. I know this because I had to go get a friggin' brown card in order to complete a handgun purchase at my local Turners (they didn't seem to care for longguns).

In any case, it is really easy to snag one of the brown address change cards. Just drop by a DMV, you shouldn't need an appointment... at my local DMV they have a big stack of blank cards at the info counter. You just handwrite the new address on one. Silly really. But it's good to have for those gun shops which are overly cautious even when they don't need to be by law (e.g. Turners).

So cadetcode, my suggestion since you are buying from Turners is to make your life easier by picking up one of those little brown cards if your address doesn't match.

That stupid brown card. I moved recently and sent in the change of address form by mail. Here on the DMV website it specifically says if you change your address by mail:

If you [mail in the change of address form], type or write in ink your new address on a small piece of paper, sign and date it. Carry this piece of paper with your license. Do not tape or staple the change of address information to your driver license.
Despite this an FFL I've used before gave me a little bit of a hard time AND a CHP officer that gave me a ticket said I should have had one as well.

Right... when you send the change of address form in to the DMV, they DON'T mail you an "official" change of address card.

When you deal with certain shops like Turners you're better off having that little brown card to make your life easier, even if it's not the law. As I noted earlier, I found it unbelievably easy to get a blank card from my DMV office. Literally stood in the info line for a couple minutes (at most), got up to the desk, and they had a whole pile of them behind the counter. I said, can I have one of those, they gave to me and I was done.
