    Carrying with an empty chamber...

does anyone besides me think that training & carrying with an empty chamber is a good option (especially where single actions AND glocks are concerned)?

The way I see it, why carry it if you are going to carry it with no round in the chamber?????????

It would be only slightly more useful than carving yourself a 1911 out of a block of wood and carrying that...

A pistol without a round in the chamber is unloaded.

If you're ever in need of pulling your concealed (or openely) carried weapon, it's for one purpose only, right? Well, if that purpose is assaulting you, racking that slide or loading a mag first and racking the slide (two hands free?) isn't realistic..you'll likely get your gun taken from you and/or used against you. Or so say those that carry...i would never know! lol

The Israelis make this their norm so it works for them. I prefer keeping one in the pipe personally.

This is what is required for Open Carry in Utah if one doesn't also have a concealed permit (fyi).
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.

To paraphrase (because I can't remember the exact quote) a friend and instructor, a gun with a loaded magazine and no round in the chamber is an ammo storage device not a self defense weapon.

If you know ahead of time that someone is going to assault you, rob you, pull a knife or gun on you, then sure you can pull out your gun ahead of time and rack it.

Me, if I knew ahead of time that I was going to be assaulted I'd just stay home.

I prefer to carry my slide in my left pocket, frame in the right and a mag in my sock

And you'd qualify for a 417 (brandishing) or 12031 then..until the threat comes. The jury would likely wonder why you didn't retreat or exhaust other non-violent means before walking with a loaded weapon in public.

I was under the impression that this was no longer the practice, and at the time, was just a bandaid fix to them having access to a large variety of firearms with very different manual of arms, so it became a substitute for knowing where all the safeties were.

I don't think it is a bad idea at all. Yes, there are several incidences where having a round in the chamer would prove to be advantageous. However, most confrontations occur with some sort of verbal exchange. If for some reason you feel threatened enough to use your weapon, pulling out the pistol should startle your foe. They don't know if it is loaded or not.

That's the thing about glocks and others similar to it. One must be well versed in hg saftey before carrying loaded. The 5.5 lb. trigger coupled with no exteral safety lever could result in an AD.The Xd's grip safety should help here. I personally have a USP .45F, and when I do have the firearm with me, I have it in DA/ safety on. I can disengage the safety in the same motion as drawing the weapon. I practiced quite a bit. Some like SA/safety on, or DA/safety off. I do both as a precautionary measure, but I still do have a round in the tube.

If you're going to prepare for the worst by carrying a gun, why prepare for only the best of the worst by keeping it unloaded?

If you're not comfortable enough with your firearm to carry it loaded, perhaps you should reconsider carrying at all until you are.
