Those Colt serial number charts are confusing. Can anyone tell me the DOB on a Colt Trooper III with a serial number 285XXJ? Would it have the early squared off grips, or later rounded grips? Thanks.

My best guess will be 1973.
They started with the J at the back in 1972 but also used the J in the front in 1972 and 1973.
The thing that has me confused is that for 1973 my book shows the last number as 01601J.
And, in 1974 they show it starting out with 28801J.Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

X2...I would estimate it at 1973, as well. My Trooper has the "J" prefix and is a 1970 (purchased new in 1970), so those serial numbers during that time always kind of confused me.
Regarding the grips, are you referring to the target stocks? Mine had the square butt. My Trooper with the target stocks is at the bottom in the photo...

Stocks, yes...sorry for calling them grips. So the bottom set would be correct for the vintage of this gun?

No worries on the stocks/grips reference...yes, that is the walnut set that came with my Trooper. The checkering comes half way up the medallion. I see original take offs come up for sale from time to time online and at shows.CH3NO2Comment
