Ideas for a .22

Gun for the BOB, small & compact and reliable? IMO, the LCR 22.

I had one (sold it because I got bored of it ) but it was a great gun that always fired with Federal bulk ammo. Hard to aim with the factory front sight, but with a big dot or CTC grips it was very accurate up to 15 yards (didn't really shoot past that with it).

the P22 is garbage. Looks and feels nice, but accuracy is "meh" and like someone said earlier, it's picky about ammo.

My buddy has a S&W 317 (Airweight .22) and it would make a fantastic BOB wheel gun. It's pricey, but it's a sweet shooter and as the name suggests, light as hell.

I am all for the M&P22 then SR22. I am hoping to get an M&P22 very soon. Everything I have read has all been great and it seems to eat just about anything. Very solid gun and very similar to its larger caliber brothers in feel and size. Seems like a winner to me.

given the current ammo situation, and depending on your needs in the present or future, I'd go with whatever is most reliable with whatever ammo is available. sure, maybe a year from now (one can hope!!) that CCI's will be back on shelves with regularity, but I'm not banking on anything like that for some time.

Skip the tacticool 22LR pistols.
Stick with the proven Ruger MK series or Browning Buck Mark.

IMO while it might not look like a GLOCK the Ruger MK series is a fine trainer for one.
The Ruger MK grip angle is similar to that of a GLOCK.
The MK3 has a thumb button magazine release just like GLOCK.


You said one of the considerations for the purpose of the pistol is for her BOB.
So in that case function over form.
Saying you will always use "good" ammo so issues will be minimized is kind of silly in a eotwawki situation.

If you want more trigger time to train with then get a Ruger MK series or Browning Buck Mark.
If you want to spend all your range time clearing jams then by all means get a tacticool.

I'd skip the 22 pistol all together and go with a break down 22 rifle *personally*.

The P22 or SR22 are fine rimfire handguns. My P22 has over 2,000 rounds and it is still firing fine. I've shot my cousin's SR22 and it is running like a champ, too. Originally, I brought the P22 to get my girlfriend to the range and she loved it. Nowadays, I bring it with me to the range because of the outrageous ammo price and availability. It is plenty accurate for plinking at the range.

I was helping a lady shooter a the indoor range with her Ruger Single Six , She was happy with that 22/22 mag combo.

Take a serious look at a .22 Magnum revolver - - like the S&W 651. I do understand that you specifically indicated a .22LR, but the Magnum will increase your flexibility, and if you get one with both the .22LR and .22 Magnum cylinder you have an ideal gun for both self defense and light hunting.

Don't discount the single-action .22 revolver. Most handgun skills translate just fine between an 1873 Colt and a 2013 Glock. I like the old Single-Six, but almost any SA will do a pretty good job for you. I've even seen a Bearcat in a store last week, which is more than I can say for most other .22 handguns of late. No "tactical cool" points but neither a target or a rabbit will give a damn.

I do know that the Sig Mosquito is very ammo sensitive. A friend that has one told me his only will shoot 40 grain round nose reliably.v I have a Ruger. MK II and is shoots everything and is very reliable. I also have a SW 22A. It's also reliable and shoots everything and is accurate. Field strips easy for cleaning. I have alSo a SR22. Have not shot it, but shot my. Friends and really liked it. You can also look at a Ruger single 10 which is very reasonably priced.

I have an SR22 and I haven't experienced any ftf or fte with any bulk ammo. The only issue (if any) is a wobbly rear sight, which is a design problem.. Fits nice in my hand and, in spite of the rear sight, quite accurate. Comes with two mags. A good value for the money.

I have a Browning Buckmark also; a great .22. Very comfortable to shoot and very accurate. There are several models and barrel lengths. Comes with one mag. Slightly expensive but a quality handgun.

I think that the 1911 or Glock or Sig with a .22LR barrel is the best idea by far. Not the cheapest of course but for a BoB, configure it with the .22LR but pack the standard barrel. Twice the option for ammo if needed and a quality piece that can be used by either of you.
