Attention: Reloaders

Reloading is great, you should do it, but just beware that primers, some kinds of bullets and certain powders are nearly impossible to find right now and have been for months. Sources tell us that this will persist for several more months. I am pretty resourceful at scrounging and I have stockpiled about fifteen or twenty thousand primers, a few thousand projectiles and about 15lbs of powder over the past month or two.

But the prices I had to pay were not bargains, they were ridiculous. So the batches of ammo I reload with all of the components will not be bargains and the ammo that I will shoot up to get the brass for all of this I bought at cheap prices a year ago.

But I wanted to get into reloading, I needed supplies to actually do it. I am going to begin casting my own bullets, at least for handgun calibers, but plated rifle bullets are really expensive right now.

Advantages:

1/ Lower cost per round
2/ Custom loads, which can be tailored to your weapons

Disadvantages:

1/ Hard to find components now
2/ You will need a lot of room to store all of the components, press, powder and loaded ammo.

I reloaded from 1984-1988, and found that I had accumulated too much brass, and other components. I lived in a big SFR home back then and had the room for the stuff. Now, I live in a much smaller home and after several homes, I ended up selling my reloading gear years ago. Just could not store and haul it around.

With reloading components hard to find, reloading press prices should drop as nobody will be buying it.

Try casting and you will save $$ right from the start. If you have more time than money it not a bad hobby. Take a look at

I can't imagine ejoying this gun hobby without the ability to make my own ammunition.

I've been reloading for 25 years. I run two Dillon machines that I bought in 1991 ish. A 1050 set up for .45ACP (and can convert to .40) and a 550 that is set up for 10MM. I also have conversion units for .223/9MM/308/40

I don't consider the cost of the machines as an expense. Dillons hold value.

I always have more than 25K primers in stock. Always buy more than you need. I once bought 4,000 winchester primed cases in .45ACP at a great price. I'am still reloading them. I buy powders in 4 pound bottles (found a bunch of AA#5)

Soon you have enough components to be independent of ammo prices, ammo shortages, money shortages..hahah..etc.

I have containers of boolets that I bought so long ago I forgot what I paid for them.

I did buy (from Midway) 500 175Grain SilverTips boolets because I'am a big fan of that round in 10MM. Using Longshot I can really have fun building some quality SD ammo.

Reloading: It's all good.

For the same cash expenditure, you can produce a higher quantity of ammo than you'd be able to buy.

You can upgrade the quality significantly at a reduced or even the same price as factory ammo.

You can tailor your loads to your gun for reduced recoil or increased velocity.

You can load ammo that fits your magazines better (like when using a .40s&w in a 1911) and runs hotter.

Reloading itself is also an interesting hobby.

I am reloading 180 gn .40 for $0.11 using 180 gn MBC lead bullets, W231 and fed primers... Buy in bulk and split with friends is how I have been doing it.
