    Xd-40

    howdy -

newbie here. put some money down on a Springfield Armory ported XD-40 gun. This is my first gun and wanted to get some opinions from the many experts on this forum. hopefully, you can help me with these questions:

    1) This is a brand new XD-40 that I have placed on hold. I have heard alot of hearsay that the rusting issue on these guns have been rectified. is this true? how can you tell if the gun has a good enough protective coating? does anyone know what kind of coating is now used?

    2) I kinda liked the idea of a ported barrel, but I have to admit that part of the allure to me is strictly aesthetic. what are you opinions on a ported barrel? will the gun require more maintenance due to the ports?

    3) I have also heard that the ports reduce the bullets velocity - this seems to make sense but does anyone know for sure? how much do the ports actually affect the velocity/force of the bullet?

any other comments or opinions regarding this gun would be much appreciated. thanks!!

I bought an Xd 40 in Feb of 04.After putting 4000rds through it
I noticed the locking block had hairline cracks on both sides.
I shipped it off to springfield under warranty. Also had them
refinish the grip safety and replace the recoil spring assembly.
I have put 500rds on it since it was repaired. All trouble free.
I have not experienced any rusting at all.I have always used
    eezox on my xd.

if your using the gun for defense purposes i'd shy away from a ported model. reason being in a dark situation the flash created will ruin your low light vision.

plus like you said, some velocity would be lost.

I have an XD-40 and have put well over 2k rounds through it. And so far I have had zero problems with it. It's a great gun and you should like it. I also agree with wrenchhead about ported barrels.

I bought my XD from a fellow member on calguns
I have put about 200 rounds in it without an issue. I like the grip feel much better than a glock. The gun is very nice.

He put aobut 800rnds through it and noticed a little rust on the slide (some get it, some don't)..Sent it to SA, they did their special armory kote (used in their custom shop). It is a darker black and goes great with the green frame. They did it for free too :-)

I would buy used if you can, you will save a bundle.

I really want a ported XD9. I hear the recoil is damn near non-existant, which would be fun.

But they sling crud from the ports which can get in your eyes unprotected, and they are really dirty. Like mentioned earlier, the flash at night could disrupt your sight picture if you're using it for self defense. The velocity does drop slightly, but I don't think it's as much of an issue as those other side effects.

Great gun though! I love my XD9 subcompact. Hoping to get the Ported V10 XD9, and a XD-45ACP as my next Springfields.

I owned the exact gun, 4" barrel right? The porting makes it very loud but the recoil of the .40 round is much easier to control. Don't worry about the negligable loss of velocity as the .40 is a screaming fast round anyway.

IMHO: Porting on an XD-40 is not a necessity. The standard load .40 S&W is quite manageable in the non-ported XD-40. Porting just adds to more cleaning time, noise, and flying particles in the shooters face! I have a few various ported revolvers and semi's and prefer shooting the non ported ones. While recoil is a little softer in the ported models, and target re-aquisition is a little faster, for regular target shooting it's not worth the trade-off for the above metioned points. HTH c good

The porting on the XD is in a v-patern and sends the blast away from the shooter so the particles flying at the shooter is a non issue. I bought mine for ipsc and action shooting so the faster target reaquisition was a major thing for me.

I've had my XD40 for about a year and about 5k rounds. I had a problem when I first got it bout 1.5k rounds the trigerr release spring (or something like that) basically the trigger came back then wouldn't go forward. Had to send it back since without gettin a reset out of the trigger I couldn't get the slide off myself. They do have good customer service getting fixed and back to me quick. I haven't had any rust problem but I keep my stuff clean and wiped.

                            XD-9 instead!!

just a quick update: after doing some research on the XD forum, I found that a majority of ported barrel .40 owners, most got them because of the unique look. they perform well, but there are some disadvantages (firing at night, extra cleaning required, etc) not enough to totally discourage me, but enough for me to check with the wife to see what she prefers. I decided to go with the regular 4" 9mm.

I'll post a range report after I get it...still on layaway...:-)

i have the XD9 with no problem. I agree the .40SW Is a manageable round, so porting is to the taste of the buyer.

For those getting their guns back to springfield for warrenty, do you need to give them anything? or just the SN of the frame and thats it, no questions? I purchased my XD9 second hand that's why.
