Fit and finish, as well as it looks good. Pristine Pythons are known to make me drool.

The Python. Why is it so desirable...?

They have always been expensive
I paid $529 when a Ruger Redhawk was $325
Smiths were in the $400 range
Looking back nowadays $500 is nothing, but back then it was allot of money
Had I known I would have bought a dozen

Doesn't do it for me...then again the big bulky revolvers aren't really my thing, they don't appeal to me for some reason. I'm all about single actions, Colt being on my list, but the double actions(Ruger Alaskan, Colt Python, etc, etc) I have no interest in. Maybe I need to shoot them more to appreciate them....sigpic

You left out "All of the Above."
People are going nuts over a $925 Python because it is severely underpriced if it's blue & in good shape. Most are probably wanting to flip it & make several hunnert bucks."He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

I would too, but I'd take a Registered Magnum or early Model 27 before I'd take a Python.
...and the "tuning" would perhaps include a bent crane.I think the name and the looks/lines are what make popular/desirable.
They certainly are not more durable than say a S&W model 27 and theDA trigger on mine isn't much better, if at all than my model 27. the double action is smooth and fast but not as linear as a S&W. The single action is not better than a S&W and all this for twice the money. If you shoot too many magnum loads, you will need some tuning, good luck finding a gunsmith willing to work on a Python.
They have that look though
I'd say just based on history that the Python seems to rival the M27's trigger.

I have an 8" nickel "Python Target" in 38 Special, of the 3 or 4 Pythons I've owned that's the one that survives. I also have an OM Trooper and OMM.
The Python action is excellent, I think the longer hammer spur gives increased leverage and adds to the perception. But it does stack and is a touch slow - less "crisp" - than Smiths. Otherwise the original "357" and OM Trooper and OMM are the same and when tweaked are as smooth as the Python.
I think the main reason for liking the Python is finish and styling.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Bought it new at Reeds in San Jose when they were located on Alum Rock (blvd-ave-rd). I didn't have a clue back then in the pre-internet cusp of the computer era as to how well these revolvers were made but I distinctly wanted a Colt revolver. I had enough money at the time to buy it and lived without some bachelor cash for a while but belive me, if you don't own one, hopefully you can find one just to shoot a cylinder's worth. .357, .38+P, .38, it truly enjoys any ammunition you can serve up.Last edited by nickel plate; 09-06-2014, 9:08 AM.Comment

I wanted a Python for years, finally was able to find one at a price that I could afford. All logical arguments aside, They just look cool. And they shoot pretty good also.

I like my Smiths, but they ARE AWESOME!
I'd pit my 586 against a Python anyday. wrt the blueing. And yes, I've shot a Python in the last 20 days.
The guns of that day have a coating that looks like ceramic.
But alas, the Colt's are worth 2-3 times the 586's. Luckily, I'm not selling.
But, the Python, Anaconda have that really awesome rail above the barrel..
