Beretta PX4 Information

My son-in-law wants to buy his first handgun and is looking at a PX4 in .40. I have two XDs and three 1911s, but do not know much about Beretta handguns. Is it a good handgun or should I steer him towards something else?

Good handgun and soft recoil.. only thing I don't like about that gun is having decocker and safety on the slider. Also, mags are expensive.

It comes with two magazines...and comes with 3 changeable back strap for the grips/handles, speed loader. Beretta is well known for military n law enforcement...good stuff...if not better!

I'd prefer you stick to a 9mm over .40, cause he might complain about the cost per box of bullets...but a higher caliber is good as long as they don't complain about the $$$!

The PX4 is in my carry rotation and a great gun, no problems through at least 2,500 rounds.

Beretta PX4 has the obvious slide mounted safety. That is evident when looking at it (unless you make the mistake of getting a double action only DOA pistol).

The S&W metal pistols (5906 series, etc.) had a slide mounted safety system, the Walther PP and PPK/S have slide mounted safeties and of course the Beretta 92/96 series guns have slide mounted safeties. Do not let a slide mounted safety be evidence that they are not good guns.

Keep in mind the safety on a PX4 decocks the hammer. There is a F model that decocks the hammer and leaves the safety "ON". There is also a G model that decosks the hammer then returns the lever to the fire position. The G model functions then much like a Sig P series. I have my PX4 set up as G model.
You can buy a F model and then get the "G" safety levers and switch it out with just a small punch. That is what I did. I prefer the G mode, no safety to worry about flicking off.

The rotating barrel of the PX4 is supposed to reduce the felt recoil when shooting. I can say my PX4 40 Cal has less recoil than my P99 40 caliber. However it has about the same recoil as my alloy frame P226 40 caliber.

I do not worship any magical caliber, some here do and preach the gospel of the "9" or the "45" etc. But soon we may all be limited to 10 rounds or less. In the event this restriction does come to pass I will carry the largest, meanest caliber in that neutered magazine capacity.

But I digress...

The PX4 itself is a fine gun. Well worth $450 (more if it has night sights). The average shooter will be able to learn to shoot it well and with the adjustable back straps it can be made to fit a wide range of hand sizes. Like almost all Berettas, the slide is wide for a pistol in its class/size.
Accessories are limited when compared to a Glock or Springfield XD. Also Beretta customer service sucks. The warranty on Beretta is only 3 years to original purchaser.
The PX4 has hammer, not a striker. Also you do not have to pull the trigger to be able to take you gun apart for cleaning.

Buy one if you can get one for a decent price. Around the Sacramento area all I see in stock are PX4's or $1700 1911's.

I just bought my first hand gun a couple weeks ago. I got a Px4 9mm. I've only put 50 rounds through it but I have no complaints at all.

I have 8000 rounds through my 9mm px4 without any hiccups and I'm one of those who prefers a slide mount safety.

Sounds like it is a good pistol. I don't think the price of ammo will bother them as my daughter has a good paying job. Thanks for the information severity.

I was looking a PX4 as well, since it about the only polymer 9mm I can find on shelves, but what is a decent price for it? Lowest Ive seen it is for $530 new.

Order the adjustable sights if you get one. A year or so ago they had a magazine deal. Off you sent a certificate in with POP you got 3 additional mags for free. I now have 5 mags.

Lowest I'm finding new is $560 so maybe I'll wait it out. But then again, this craze may not subside and prices for new handguns may not fall below $500 again.

Excellent pistol. I have one in my nightstand, with a Streamlight light and laser combination in 9mm.
Wife likes it. Shoots good. I like a double action with the safety for a HD pistol. I do own an XD9 for IDPA and and XD45, and a Glock 35 for USPSA.
Of course, I could not use my competition guns for carry or HD due to the trigger jobs.

Can I use 92FS mags in PX4?

Sadly not the 92FS mags will not work in the Px4. the mags fit in the weapon fine but will not lock into place. Would have been a great idea for beretta to do that though.

i have a Px4 9mm with about 1000 rounds through it. The only modification I have made was adding a slip on rubber grip. I found when my hand sweat the grip became a little slippery. The rubber grip only cost $12 at turners and makes the already ergonomic grip and much better feel. All in all the Px4 if a good weapon to start out with. For the price in my opinion it is a bargain. The only draw back I have found it the lack of accessories for it at retail gun store. Most of the time if i want something for it (holster, mags, etc.) I have to buy on line.
