How do I aim the M&P?

Hey guys,

I apologize if this is asked a lot but I've tried to search and haven't gotten a definitive answer. Just got myself an M&P .40 full size and I've done a lot of searching and I am getting all mixed up. When I get the centerline of the dots lined up, the top of my front sight sits lower than the tops of the rear sights and when I align the tops of the sights, my front dot is raised.

1. Do I align the dots or the tops of the sights on an M&P .40 FS?
2. Now with that alignment point, where do I point that relative to the bulls eye of a target?

For instance, if it is the dot, does the front dot overlap the bullseye or right below it?

You don't align the dots, you align the top of the sights. This is one reason why 3 dot sights suck.

The dots draw your eye/focus off the "clear tip" of the forward sight! I always black out the three dots or whatever idiot proof system is on any handgun I get,with the exception of my trijicon night sight equipped carry pistols

Aligned top of sight seems like the clear winner! But the link and photo is what makes me think M&P might be a bit different? Those photos show an aligned dot and sight whereas the M&P can't do both.

TBC's photo shows top of aligned sight right at dead center but Reckoner's post states dot overlapping dead center. Can anyone chime in on which is recommended?

Image 2 is the one you want. Ignore the dots.

Front sight on target first. Then match front and rear sight height. Front sight post should be clear, rear sight posts and target should be blurry. Both eyes open.

When you say front sight on target first, you mean dot on target then line up the rear heights with the front ones(while keeping dot centered on target) correct?

@hogleg I can see how there isn't a clear cut way to aim an M&P. Is that safe to say?

Why don't you shoot it an see? Start close then gradually move the target out. You'll get to know your pistol well and have some fun at the same time

I would line the three dots up, and put the center dot (front sight) over your intended point of impact.

Ha trust me, I did and as a new shooter there is so many things I'm trying to work on it was hard to really pinpoint certain things. Went through 200 rounds actually. I was lucky enough have a friend and he taught me gun safety, stance, grip, trigger control, trigger follow through, ready position, sight acquisition, unloading/loading, shooting with both eyes open... and before I knew it I ran out of ammo.

I'd like to be prepared with the correct sight picture to replicate before going out there and shooting again so I figured I'd make a thread.

You put front dot on target, align the tops of the front and rear. See how irrelevant rear dots are?

I don't know which sight picture your gun has.

I have a M&P45. At 7 yards Image #3 works best, at 25 yards Image #2 seems to work best. Great guns, enjoy!
