Getting a used Glock, should I replace anything?

I forgot to say how much I paid . It was $400 for the Glock, which included a free Hogue grip sleeve and Boresnake. I also got Trijicon night sights for $100 which are being installed for free, and since the original tupperware is gone I got a nice discount on a range bag.

Add in DROS, tax, a Blackhawk holster and another mag, and that $400 gun becomes almost $700 out the door.



Sounds good , but I won't be picking it up for around a month (looking at around April 24/25). If you're around I'll take you up on that.

As for the mag catch, is it this style instead of just longer? Seems like it'd be a nice addition for lefty use.

That's insane. I picked up a safequeen G23 (maybe 50-100 rounds, not a mark on it) with a brand new set of Trijicons and 4 mags (including two rebuild kits) for $500 or $535 out-the-door. For the extra $165.00 I can pick up a hell of a leather carry setup (just picked up a Mitch Rosen JR5 holster and combo mag/flashlight carrier for $90) and still have money left over for about 300 rounds of practice ammo.

Ouch. I picked up a used G23 3rd gen for $400 also with factory night sights here on Calguns a while back. No mags though, but it only had 1K rounds through it and looked new.

New pair of mags on Glocktalk costs me $20 shipped.

$400 for G23 w/ night sights + $20 for mags + $35 PPT fees = $455 total.

With all guns, I usually replace the springs, whether it needs it or not. It's cheap insurance, and only three springs anyways (recoil, plunger, and trigger).

Enjoy that G23, it's a nice pistol.

Cute and I did note your wink. I wasn't specifically knocking Glocks, just an attempt at a bit of humor. You and Odesskiy sound like some of the members on Glock Talk, who, if it isn't a Glock and someone mentions XD, immediately calls it crap.

I'm not trying to get into a XD/Glock war, but XDs are not Croatian "crap." They are an excellent gun. I've carried my SC as a ccw for over 4yrs. and have absolutely no doubt it will do what it is supposed to do if I ever (hope I don't) need it. I have never had a problem with it.

Glocks are excellent guns and I intended to buy one of their subcompacts upon retirement and free from dept. restrictions. I "limpwristed" with all three and couldn't understand why as I had never had that problem. I hadn't even heard of XDs at that time. I tried a 4" model at the range and liked it. Bought the 3" from the LAPD store and have never experienced limpwristing.

You like the Glocks, fine. I'm not knocking them, please don't knock my choice.

Also, you will find, if you went to xdtalk.com, that many members have both and the majority of XD owners don't knock Glocks like Glock owners do XDs and their owners.

Since it's at a store, any chance you can get out of it? It hasn't DROS yet has it? There is plenty of Glocks out there with mush less mileage and better deal.. you should look into it. Night Sites are about $70-$80 for decent ones

I apologize for the earlier post. It was in no way meant to insult you personally. You are certainly free to chose any firearms that suit your needs.

The reason I'm a bit harsh on XD comes from my recent experience at Front Sight. I got a chance to see a lot of different guns in action in less than ideal conditions (sand, dust, rocks, etc.). I saw two XD's repeatedly malfunctioning, while none of the Glocks (including mine) had any problems. I saw an expensive 1911 replaced by a backup Glock on day 2, etc. I think that most modern handguns are going to function very well at the range, but a lot fewer can do the same when conditions become tougher. It was pretty scary to see what my gun looked like inside when I broght it home and detail-stripped it, but it never missed a beat.

Once again, sorry for the flame, last thing I want is to start a Glock vs. XYZ war.

Who knows how those XDs were taken care prior to going to Front Sight. But, I do know Glock has been around longer and I know there is a thread on GT about the torture test one member put his thru (amazing as I read it). There is a similar test done with a XD and with similar results. There are also the infamous stories of Glock Kabooms and the XD 40 cracking blocks and the finish on the earlier XDs (they now have a similar Glock finish; one is called Tennifer, one Melonite, both the same from what I've read).

Both fine guns as I said. Both being mechanical, have had some problems. For you, the Glock works and for me the XD for my particular purpose (ccw). I suppose one day I'll have a Glock, just because, but it will be one of the bigger ones for range purposes only; perhaps a 10mm for sh**s and grins.

Since Waingo brought up the butt plug, here is something I was told on why that space is left open.

From what I was told from a CCW instructor, that open space in the back makes it very easy to strip a mag from the gun in case you had a malfunction, ie double feed, etc.

Now with the plug in place it case still be done but not as easy. Ever notice why the bottom, back of the magwell has the upside down U? The front of the magwell (front strap) also has it on most Glock models also. It gives your thumb and index finger more access to the bottom of the mag.

If you are using mags with extended base pads it can become a non-issue.

You can take this for what it is worth. I never really gave it much thought until it was pointed out to me.

Correct. The original Glock specs left that space open for stripping mags (malfunction or no). The original mags (what are now called "non-drop free") were made that way on purpose for the Austrian military at their request. While drop free mags are nice in the US and in range/competition use; they're not always so nice in combat/training situations in inclement weather & snow (Austria isn't exactly sunny in winter).

Also, that space is open for drainage should the pistol be submerged in liquid. If you do a full detail strip you'll notice the trigger housing's location opens up on the bottom into the rear of the grip frame.

Your pistol will probably never be submerged, and you'll probably never need to strip a stuck mag that quickly... but what *good* does that plug do you? lol

Tried searching and found nothing. Looked on some other websites and have seen various replies, so I'll ask here.

I'm picking up one of Bullseye's former range rental guns (Glock 23) with around 20k rounds on it (their estimate). Looked fine and shot like a champ when I was DROSing it. My question is, do I need to swap anything out right now with its current round count, or should I just wait until something breaks and replace it? I'm thinking specifically of whether it needs a new barrel or not, but I also don't know if the springs need to be replaced or not; I can't find what their service life is estimated it.

Here is what you do... go to www.gssfonline.com and look for the next GSSF match which you can get to. IIRC, NorCA, in Richmond in Aug, SoCAL, in Apr and in Oct.

Bring you gun to the event, and let the glock gunsmith check your gun out FOR FREE. And he will have ANY PARTs there for replacement, all the springs etc.... tell him the history of the gun, and he will look it over... if ANYTHING needs replacement, he will do it FOR FREE! (And very possibly due to the history of the gun, he will likely replaces all the springs for you.... FOR FREE)

And while you are there..... go do a match.... for $25... for your chance to win another glock!!

You might have paid about $50-100 more than you could have if you'd spent months looking for something better, but this way you get to shoot now. Don't overthink things.

I'm FAR from a Glock fanboy... I think they serve their purpose VERY well, as do the XD. I'm surprised by Odesskiy's experience...

I do not like the feel of the XD. The grip shape and my hand have issues. When I shoot thumbs forward with it the palm of my hand gets tender. I don't have this problem with my 1911s, HKs, Sigs, Glocks, etc. etc....

That's just personal preference and has nothing to do with the suitability of the gun.

Anyone think a used Gen 1 or 2 17 could be found for $300.00 or $325.00 ? It's that or a Vintage Leo Shotgun ... then a Cetme or Fal Build

You can come across them for that much. I bought a Gen 2 G22 from a calguns member last week for $285 w/no mags. It will make a nice gun for friends to shoot if they go to the range with me. The slide has a small amount of finish wear and I called Glock and they said it costs $45 to recoat it plus shipping. After we DROSed it I think I'm going to leave it as is until it gets worse.

My .02, and others may disagree, but in any of the major caliber Glocks you can't go wrong with an aftermarket barrel with a supported chamber.

Lots of aftermarket barrels for the 23, I'd go with BarSto, but it will take them 12-16 weeks to deliver. I've heard good things about Stormlake, but don't have first hand experience with them.

Recoil springs and a good detail strip and clean, you'll be gtg.

General note: never, ever buy one of the off-brand gun show bbls for a Glock. They are only good as paperweights.
