RUSTY GUNS IN SAFE!!!!

Does anyone have suggestions on how to prevent guns from getting slight surface rust while in the safe for very long periods of time? Other than soaking them all in a thick coat of oil, or taking them all out and cleaning them every 6 months?

Luckily it was caught in time, but it scared the crap out of me.

Was looking at the "rechargeable" dessicant containers(http://www.storeguns.com/humidity-control/dessicants) that can be placed in the oven to "recharge" since there is NO OUTLET in the safe.

Other suggestions/tips from the pros?

If the gun safe is stored in an unregulated environment (outside, shed) rust may be all but assured. If the gun safe is inside, good protectant and dessicant should be enough. Also, if you handle the guns, give them a good wipe-down before storing again. The oils and grime from your hands can cause rust, even if you don't see residue. Again, the environment is key. Ex: If someone suffers a heat injury, the first step is to remove the person from the hot environment.

Depending on the guns and the finish, rust happens sometime. You found the rust, got rid of it, cleaned it, and all is well again. Long term storage is a friend of rust, as well.

A friend of mine uses vacuum bags for storage with good results.

Another vote for a Golden Rod.

Keep that safe inside the house.

Either use a lot of descant,
Spray down the firearm with Birchwood Casey Baricade or similar.
Or
Drill a hole and install an outlet or cord for a goldenrod.

Light coat of oil and a good dehumidifier works for me. Texas humidity is pretty bad.

Exactly what he said. They're electric and they slightly raise the temp in the safe above the temp outside the safe preventing moisture.

RIG is also a great product for guns you store for extended periods of time between use.

I use these stack on rechargeable packs from any local gun store. They cost about $20 and work fantastic. About once every 2 months you take them out and recharge them by plugging into an outlet over night.

As you can see I also keep a humidity meter above it and it always reads near perfect.

In the safe pictured here I probably have 20 guns in it, many very very old and there is never any rust anywhere on any of them.

I keep one of these in every safe I own. I have an outlet in my largest safe and choose this over a golden rod. I know the golden rods work but I don't feel like I want something plugged in around some of my most expensive stuff.

Rule 1 is to wipe your darn fingerprints and handprints off your firearms, especially blued ones. I use a silicone treated gun cleaning cloth. Sweat/fingerprints from your hands contain sodium, chloride and water. If you want a formula for how to rust a firearm thats a good start.

If your house is near the ocean or has high temperature swings you'll likely need a dehumidifier of some type. If the temperature stays relatively constant you may not need one but it certainly won't hurt.

I have firearms I've stored in my safe for 40 years with no dehumidifier. But I whipe them down religiously after handling and live in a dry climate. All machined surfaces must be kept coated with oil. All exterior surfaces must be whiped down with a lubricated cloth.

Good to know. I have the exact same thing. Gotta get me one of those humidity meters.

I do have juice into my safe & was considering leaving it plugged in all the time.

I have one of the Eva-Dry rechargeable dessicants - got it on eBay for $17 including shipping. I also have a humidity meter ($5 on eBay) and find it stays steady at 60% which is still a tad high so I might add another Eva-Dry unit
