Unloaded and in a locked container.
Ammo can be in the same locked container as long as it is not in the firearm's chamber/cylinder/magazine well/fixed magazine.

Why not get a CCW and make it an easy method of carry?

He may live in one of the "Safe" Cities. You know, the ones that the Sheriff doesn't think everyone needs to carry.

The majority of CA law abiding tax paying citizens do NOT live in counties that are LTC/CCW friendly....

Quiet, does a locked saddle bag constitute a locked container?

yes if you cannot reach in and access the gun when it is locked........some saddlebags are way floppy.

Yes, double safe if you lock the backpack.

If it were easy, that would be a solution.

                  Sort of like good posts.

I use a soft gun case with a travel lock threw the zippers. then I put it into my tank bag or a back pack strapped to the bike these have a lock on them as well threw the zippers.
I would not want to have a gun in a backpack just in cased I crashed. The gun will break bones if you land on it

I crashed my supermoto one time landed on my cell phone in my front pocket, it left a 10" bruise on my right thigh. Just imagine what a piece of metal would do to you if you landed on it, OUCH!!

I have applied and have been approved for a CCW. Just waiting the 6 to 8 weeks for the permit to arrive in the mail.

In that case, a good shoulder holster would be preferred, as to not risk your jacket or vest raising up in the wind to show. You can also carry in the saddlebags with no concern of a locked container.l

An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

I hope I'm not threadjacking, but I have a related question and I don't want to start a new thread. I know the new long gun carry laws say if your case isn't designed as a gun case, it must be locked. I don't want to sling a long hard case across my back while I ride down the freeway, and my side cases aren't big enough to fit my whole AR. Since the lower receiver is considered the firearm, can I put the lower in my hard locking side case, and the upper in a backpack, or stuffed in a bedroll behind me on the back seat?

i've been commuting to and from work/home with the nanovault with the combo lock setting. relatively cheap, and pretty sturdy for everyday use.

Sure, shouldn't be a problem imo (am not a lawyer, just a shooter and former street bike rider). Would advise whatever you put the upper in completely conceals it so you don't get someone calling 9-1-1 on you while you're riding and exposing your muzzle.

Also, riders might consider putting the upper in a FedEx box, maybe a tennis racket bag if it fits?
