Gp100 vs security six

Hi, in the market for a revolver and was curious what some of the main differences between these two guns were. Is the s6 a smaller frame size? I have read that it is lighter but not much else. Is there any reason why I would want to buy one over the other? Thanks!

I believe the GP100 replaced the Security Six, either would be a great gun. One issue would be availability, the GP100 is on the roster, the Security Six is not and would require a PPT.

I sold a Security Six too buy a GP100 over 20 years ago. I still have a Speed Six, which is a rounded grip frame and fixed sight version of the Security Six.
The GP100 is the newer version and still readily available new or used.
The Security Six was discontinued in the 1980's and is not easy too find. I expect prices too be upward of $400 and you can only buy from a Private Party in CA.
The S6 has a lower profile than the GP. I like both, but personally like the feel of the GP just a little better. Both are very reliable and should last a lifetime.

$450 to $500, most have extras like holsters and speedloaders if you buy them used.

I've been shopping for a SS6" S6 for a while to replace one that was stolen 20+years ago. It was my first gun so kinda nostalgic reasons. They are tough to come by and sell fast. 4-$500 range. If I didn't have the nostalgia for the S6 I think I would get the GP but they are a 1-$200 more.

Many revolvers have come and go in my handgun safe but my old 4" service six will always be my keeper. The grip fits my hand perfectly and thus it's a perfect pointer for me.

My father passed away and in his collection was a Security Six, Police Marksman Association edition. He had originally bought this gun in a two-gun set. Included was Security Six and a Ruger Redhawk, a stainless California Highway Patrol model. Both had the same serial number. The redhawk was chambered in .38 Special and the Security Six was chambered in .357 Magnum. Unfortunately the Redhawk was stolen back in the 90's.

My father's intention was that I was to inherit his entire firearm collection, except one. He always made sure that I knew that the Security Six was to be given to my sister.

I stored it for her for years because she had no safe place to store it. I took it out a few times to shoot it and stretch its legs.

It's a great gun. It's very smooth and easy to handle. It did have special grips on it being a Police Marksman Association edition. They are wider, fatter, and longer than the frame of the gun. It made it feel sooo comfortable in my hands. It's easy to clean and maintain. My sister took possession of it a long time ago and she loves it. She shoots it very accurately.

I'd recommend this gun to anyone interested in it. Very solid and reliable gun.

You also have to take into your buying how they look.





They are both great guns and will do you well.

I just like the looks of the GP100 better.

I picked up a 2.75" police six in 95% condition last year. $380 and came with a soft case and pachmyr grips. As morr pointed out, the stock grips suck. Solid gun though, it's my "garage gun" for when working on the cars, reloading, and such.

I have 3 GP's a 4" .327 mag, a 4" .357 mag and a 6" .357 mag.
NONE of these three are ever gonna see another owner....'cept my boys when I'm long gone.

You can get the Security 6 or GP you're not going to go wrong either way.
