Another which gun question

So the time has come to add a new hand gun to the collection. This gun will serve no purpose but to just have and occasionally put holes in paper. I can't decide between a revolver(gp100, sp101, or 686) or an entry level 1911(sig or Springfield). I don't have either style of gun nor do I have something in similar calibers. I don't have any experience with a 1911 and wouldn't have a clue as to what to look for. So any help or info on 1911's would be appreciated. I have a decent amount of knowledge on the wheel guns and that is just a matter of which fits best. Max budget is 1000. What says Calguns?

Get a 686, not a whole lot of 1911 for $1k that I could recommend.

plenty of good 1911's under 1k... OP look at what Ernie has to sell....Not only is his customer service amazing he has awesome low prices. I just picked up a 1911 from him this morning! As to your original question I would get a Springfield 1911 (if you could find one) or a Sig... Ernie has lots of Sig 1911's in stock. check him out. good luck with your choice. Well I definitely want to give Earnie my business. His prices are great! What separates a 900 dollar 1911 from a 1500 dollar one? I want out of the box quality and good factory support. Why is the Dan Wesson so much better than a Springfield or a Sig?

Well, I cant really answer that because I never owned a Dan Wesson... My Springfield was hand assembled in America (I have the NM serial number model) and I believe the higher end 1911's will also be hand assembled with metal parts... I know Sig and other companies use MIM products in their guns and some guys are worried about that... My SA is stainless steel and titanium parts... Also Springfield has some of the best customer service in the business... As for Ernie.... The man is pure gold... I went to pick up my Springfield 1911 and DROS a second gun on the spot... A Rock Island Armory Tactical 1911 Compact in 45acp lol... I could not pass the gun up... For out of the box you will be very happy with Springfield, Sig (although I've heard they had questionable customer service, they still make some amazing guns), Smith and Wesson has some very smooth and beautiful 1911s (expensive as well) I can't throw in with Kimber... (I got my flamesuit on) because they do not warranty their guns for life... Only a year or two... granted some guys have stated Kimber has treated them right and fixed guns after the one year warranty expired... But to me I will not buy something that expensive and "hope" they treat me right... Not trying to bash Kimber, like all companies they produced some lemons but the majority are solid shooters and have tight fittings. Lots of guys will get a Rock Island because of the price... They get a pretty solid shooter for under 600... some guys complain about the trigger but that compact I DROS today had a smooth trigger... Talk to Ernie while you can because hes shutting down for 2 weeks starting the 15th for inventory etc... Tell him Jason sent you... He will treat you right, like many other people here that swear by him... Buy from him and I promise you too will be spreading the word about him. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search!

The Springfield you got was one of the ones I was looking at. Why did you end up getting that one? Have you owned others? If so what was your experience with them?

that was my first 1911 purchase... I got this one based on how rare it is, its build quality and based on Springfields superb customer service... They have a lifetime warranty... I do not have hands on experience but I've been a long time admirer and I've read hours (rolls eyes, literally man...hours) of reviews and videos on different 1911's... the Springfield felt like it was made for my hands... super tight tolerances as well. I am 100% in love with my Springfield... I also just DROS my second 1911 today on the spot from guess who? Ernie hahahah I have to pick it up around the 7th though.... (damn ca gun laws waiting 30 days). I got a tactical compact. Felt soooooo good in my hand as well has gotten great feedback. It was love at first feel/sight

The GP-100 was the first gun I purchased. Got it for home defense because I like the simplicity and reliability of a revolver. Since then I got my Glock 17 and tend to rely on that but it's still nice knowing I have a trusty wheel gun if I need it

I would get a 1911, they are such beautiful pistols and even if you buy a new one, the design itself still has a lot of history behind it. I feel like every American gun owner should have a 1911 in .45 and a M1 Garand in his collection.

I've only heard good things about RIAs from those who own one, and I've been VERY happy with the RIA Tactical I purchased a couple months ago. For $550 OTD I got a great looking 1911 that comes with a beavertail grip safety and some other goodies that don't come on the standard GI models. My RIA has been a champ: it's very accurate and I've only had one malfunction in 600 rounds so far (an inertial feed of the last round in the mag which was caused by the magazine, not the gun). I've since purchased some Wilson Combat 47D mags and some Chip McCormick Shooting stars, and haven't had a single problem since. For less than $600 you'd be hard-pressed to find a better value on a 1911.

That being said, for a little more you can get a Springfield GI which will look a little nicer than an RIA (the quality of finish is the most common complaint about RIAs, but that may not matter to you if it's just a range toy). If you want to customize the pistol yourself by adding a beavertail grip safety, match barrel/bushing, trigger job, or whatever else you may want then I would get the Springfield as a base gun. If you want to save some money to spend on more ammo/range time, the RIA Tactical is cheaper and comes with many of the "extras" people end up adding to their GIs anyway. FWIW they are both series 70 clones, so they do not have a firing pin safety and are closer to Browning's original design than some other companies' 1911s. Both RIA and Springfield are known for their good customer service, so in that respect you can feel safe owning either knowing that the company stands behind their products.

In summary, do some more research and get yourself a 1911!!!
