Do I figure in ammo in the price of a new gun? No. Do I select guns based on ammo affordability and availability? You bet.

I've streamlined my collection over the past couple of years to calibers that I consider affordable - 30-30, .223, .357/.38, .22lr, 7.62 x 54r. If it costs over $20 for a box, I'm not doing it anymore. I don't want to be thinking about cost when I shoot.

I try to buy a gun based upon purpose not ammo cost.

I recently picked up a Glock 30 because it is going to be my CCW and camp/outdoor gun... can't do more than one gun right now

Yup, cost of practice/training is a bit more than my old 9mm... okay, quite a bit Now I'm looking at reloading

Of course cost to feed a handgun is a consideration, but availability of needed ammo is the most important factor for me.
I found a giveaway price on a new G-37 once, but .45 GAP ammo was nowhere to be found, so I passed.

I've considered the cost of ammo in relationship to the firearm I'm going to purchase, in terms of what I would need to reload the casings. My problem has been limiting how many different calibers I want to have. I'm now up to 8 different calibers: .22LR, 9mm, .357/38, 44, 45ACP, .223 Rem. and 7mm TC/U.

Thankfully, you can't reload .22LR so that's a relief. The one thing I can say is if one component is scarce, say Large Pistol Primer, I look to see how Small Pistol Primers are doing or Small Rifle; in the worst case, I shoot .22LR . When we had a primer shortage, I put out orders for all kinds of primers and bullets; whatever came in where a complete cartridge could be constructed, that would be what I would take to the range the following weekend.

Funny story, when I was helping a friend reload (he trusts me) .38 special, I realized I had a lot of magnum small pistol primers and there was plenty of lead and powder from when I used to own a Ruger Security Six.. so I bought myself a S&W 627-PC.

I pretty much buy what I want too...a nice MAK can be very nice; I'm on the lookout for an East German one.

But I usually figure out the purchase cost as the gun + 1k rounds to start out.

One of the reasons I got out of my .380 guns was I just couldn't see enough benefit in them over 9mm pistols to justify buying 1k rounds

The guns I have, I've had for years....38, .22LR 12ga, 7.62x39. Entering the .223 class, it's just another expense. You shoot...you pay. Reloading is starting to look real good!

I have a couple of different calibers and picking up a 10mm soon, but cost is not the factor I look at, but availability is a concern.

I shoot what I have and restock when I can afford it, $500 just getting enough for all my firearms for a good weekend of shooting adds up.

I kind of factor in the cost of ammo only when buying a caliber I do not currently own. This is not a huge factor but more like total cost of ownership as I do not currently reload.

When I settle in Idaho I plan on investing in reloading equipment.

When I first bought my 1911 in .45, I didn't. I truthfully didn't think that I would shoot as much and that 100 rounds would go THAT fast! I figured that shooting would be something I would do maybe once a month. But, ever since my wife started getting into it, we've BOTH been shooting a lot! So, while I don't consider the cost of ammo in the cost of the gun I'm about to buy, I DO take it into consideration as far as caliber is concerned. So, at this point, I wouldn't buy another .45. (Which explains my recent 9 mm acquisition).

I figure that the gun itself will be the important piece. If I don't like it, or it doesn't like me, I won't shoot it-so it doesn't really matter if it's $50/box or $10/box. I have to like the gun. I guess it's kind of like the car I drive. I bought it because I like the way it drives and it fits what I need. The fact that it takes Super Unleaded is secondary. It is a consideration though.

                      Yep that's why I shoot 9mm exclusively

I'm a student and 45 is out of my budget.

I would rather shoot more then have a big bore I rarely shoot.

                      9mm for life!!

I didn't like the MSRP on my S&W 500 mag and I sure didn't like the price of the ammo but some things you just gotta say screw it and buy anyway. I would do it again too. I don't shoot much and that one see's very few rounds through it but I have about 300 rounds for it anyway.

I guess I'm different, as I try to buy different cals to expand my collection.

On the other hand I don't have a 45 handgun because I have handguns already in .500Mag, .22LR, 9mm, .38, .44 Mag, .40S&W and I would want to shoot the .45 like my.9mm and .40 (a lot) and .45 ammo prices seem insaine IMO

Kind of. I look more at availabilty of brass. .45ACP & 9mm brass range from free to dirt cheap. .38SP & .357 Magnum are going to be a little bit harder to find for free but are still fairly cheap to buy used. If I was able to get 10mm brass for free I would probably already own one.

I'm looking at a .223 bolt gun vice a .308 simply because I've accumulated a ton of 5.56/.223 brass over the years.

I don't think I would really want anything in a truly obscure caliber.

When I bought my first handgun the shop owner told me that "Buying the gun is the cheap part."

                          He was right.

Nope. I do figure in the price for quality sights and any other necessary upgrades.
