This same thing actually happened to me with my S&W 59. When you rack it all the
Way back without the takedown pin through the frame it can unseat the recoil spring, or it's the barrel but I had to insert magazine which moved the mag release and let me release slide and try again. Attach slide, pop in pin, move slide rearward till notch aligns with hole and snap in. No problem.
