    Ruger Mark 2

After all the money spent on the lower receiver madness in Dec, Jan, and Feb, after all the time I spent demilling and building an AK with a spud receiver, after finding myself stacking pistols on top of each other and pushing rifles and shotguns aside to make room in my gun safe, I told myself I'm not going to buy another gun. No more. I have enough to last a lifetime and a little extra. Then the issue of Shotgun News arrived yesterday and I began looking at it. Then I began to look at .22lr pistols on gunbroker. Then it happened.

I bought a Ruger Mark 2 stainless competition pistol with a 6 7/8" barrel. I really should not have done it, but it's hard to stop myself sometimes. I rationalized that I didn't have a .22 rimfire pistol, but only have centerfire handguns, and my daughter will need a .22 to learn with some day. Maybe in 6 years, maybe 10 years. I remember how crappy my Ruger Mini-14 shot and vowed never to buy another Ruger again, but even if the Mark 2 isn't very accurate, it's OK, because my daughter won't know that when she's just starting out. She'll be excited just to be able to shoot a pistol with dad... in 10 years or so. I told myself, this pistol is the last one, it's for my daughter, not for me. Really.

    I'm sick.

I always get the first gun for me, the second for my wife, the third for my first sone, snd then the fourth for my second son. How else can you justify 4 Ruger 10/22s and 4 Ruger MKIIs??!!

All of Ruger's designs have their own high and low points. I'm not too happy with my Mini 14, either, but my other Rugers have been very good.

My MK512 (bull-barrel Mk2) is accurate with the right ammo, and is reasonably reliable when it's clean since I put in a Volquartsen extractor. Before that, it wouldn't extract duds very well.

The Mini 14, on the other hand, is very reliable, but not very accurate.

My 10/22 is reliable but not super accurate without some upgrades. It's better than the Mini, though.

My Blackhawk .357 is both reliable and accurate, with an excellent light trigger. My old snubby Security Six is very reliable and medium accurate, with a longer, harder trigger.

My P95 is extremely reliable with OK but not great accuracy.

The one plus of every one of them is that they were inexpensive, and that's a Good Thing for me.

Now's the time to get the Mark 2 Competition model, they've stopped making them in favor of the Mark3. Those are pretty accurate pistols.

I have a Government model and would prefer the Competition model.

I have an older MK2 that was given to me along time ago but its safety wont stay set, other than that it's a nice shooter.

Every Ruger gun I have exceeds my expectations. There is no other commercially available alternative to the 10/22 that is worth it. Others have tried and failed. The 10/22 is the best .22 for the money, no doubt. I personally don't get all of the negativity over the mini 14. Mine is great. It is accurate (as can be expected for a carbine), and shoots reliably. My Mark II pistol is awesome, but I hate cleaning the damn thing and really wish they would have come up with a better alternative to that lever thing in the grip crap.

I have a slab side MkII that I put Volquortson(or however you spell it) grips on and it is a tack driver. As far as the magazine thing, they did fix it on the MkIII. I have a MkI also and it is a blast to shoot.

The Mark III has the mag release up by the grip like the 22/45 did and like a 1911. It also has a mag disconnect which makes it even more of a PITA to strip since you now have to insert the mag to manipulate the hammer to swing the MSH up and latch it.

My magic crystal ball forsees you keeping the MkII to shoot for yourself, wishing you could buy a PacNor upper for your daughter, and settling by buying her a 4" taper barrel MkII or 22/45.

The 6 7/8 bull barrel makes for a fairly heavy pistol for people who don't shoot much/aren't as physically strong and want to shoot offhand. If she is happy shooting off a rest she will love it when she comes of age.

I'm collecting for my toddler daughter as well

I'm afraid this might happen. I'm doomed to buy more guns once my daughter takes up shooting.

I'm addicted to Rugers. Over the last week, I got yet another Mk III. These things are awesome; they shoot straight, are reliable and durable. My new one is going to get a Bushnell red dot scope. I'm going to make my current Mk III Hunter without a scope so I can practice my sight alignments fundamentals.

I've got a couple 10/22s. I modded one with Green Mountain fluted stainless steel barrel and a Revival wood laminate stock and a bunch of other add-ons. It has a Simmons 3-9x40mm scope and the thing is supa accurate!

Also over the last week, I got yet another Ruger. This was a consignment sale at a Hollywood gunstore and I couldn't let it go. It's a Super Blackhawk, single-action revolver, .44 magnum, 10" barrel. Big' um bullets!

My sentiments exactly. I just wish Bill Ruger wasn't such a jerk.
