Well, I have taken a long break from owning a 1911. In 2008 I purchased a Kimber custom 2, it was pretty awesome althought it took about 700+ rounds to finally break in and be reliable by then I was on to bigger and better things or so I thought so it was sold and let's put it this way my Itrader was 0 back then so oh man........
Anyways in following years or owning, trading, shooting I've owned a Kimber TLE II RL in stainless and blued, both had reliability issues as pre owned on one and out of the box I did not want to spend the dough on putting 1k rounds through it which is what most told me I had to do so I made buyers aware that they were stillin the break in period and traded and got heavily into Sig's which are still my fav.
After owning a Dan wesson Cbob, Springfield TRP Operator & MC Operator, Wilson Combat Protector and Nighthawk T3 that leaves a certain expectation on you, heck it just screws you up. So for the longest time I refused to pick up any 1911's because of the cost of getting a good one.
Last week I saw a Kimber Custom II go up for sale at a reasonable price $650, found out it was a 2005 or older and that got me excited, I did a PPT and went to a local gunsmith and had the plans to do a trigger job, reliability overhaul whatever it took to make this sucker work and for the price I paid I had room to do so (btw it only had 100 rounds through it and showed). After carefull inspection, testing out the trigger and putting a couple boxes through it, holy crap the internals were polished and maybe honed is the word, sorry for my lack of expertise it's been a while, trigger was right around 4lb this was a true freaking custom gun out of the box. WHAT the heck happened, I have so many friends that swore off kimber's due to reliability issues and some part of me wanted to make one work even if I had to spend a few hundred bux to do so. Now I just orderd a pair of TFO sights and VZ slim grips and this sucker is staying in the collection without a doubt. I'll be in this in the low 800's when done and that's how it should be for a reliable shooter without having to waste your first $400 in ammo to get it warmed up..
Thanks for reading my rant, to sum it up I wanted any feedback from others if their kimber's have gotten better over the years or if I want to expand my kimber collection I am doomed to only look for earlier years in which most people wont want to get rid of. I know Nighthawk has some of the same issues but i've owned newer ones and shot them out of the box and they have all been flawless, grant it you better get that for $2500+..
