I recently acquired an RIA 1911- 9mm commander length (second owner). It came to me with extraction problems. The gunsmiths at RIA took good care of me and the pistol is running well now. RIA has affordable 1911's and a super customer service operation, they even paid all the shipping on mine. The 1911 in 9mm is a sweet shooting pistol.

Great review! Valkyrie arms is right over the hill from me. I'll have to run up there and check out their selection.

What is your opinion of doing the SSE? As a first time pistol buyer I've never done one, and I'm curious if it's difficult to change back from single shot.

Also, is an SSE the only way to get a pistol without the magazine disconnect? I feel like the disconnect adds extra parts that could mess up (maybe I'm wrong).

Thanks for any help, I'm just trying to find my way through all this!

The Springfield Loaded 9mm's are great pistols. You also have Kimber and Dan Wesson.

SSE is pretty easy. Valkyrie Arms will change it back to Factory Configuration for you.

Well the GP-35 High Power is what Browning intended the 1911 in 9mm to be. It's as close to perfection in a steel handgun that you can get, other than the magazine disconnect which was a stupid French military requirement added later.

The OP may want to do some math. How much is the savings per round between 9mm & .45ACP? Factor that savings per round to the cost of a 9mm 1911. If the goal is cheap practice, look into a .22LR conversion kit or a Molina. If you just want another 1911 in your collection, just get one for that reason. You should maybe look into 1911s in other calibers like the .38s.

Happy Springfield Target 9mm owner here. Absolutely fantastic handgun, my favorite right now. Dead accurate, tons of fun, and almost zero recoil. A co worker has one he used to run in competition, he has over 10,000 rounds through his and he says he has had no issues. I wanna build a custom 9mm 1911 real bad, kind of wanna start with a 2011 RIA

I was just reading up on the PM9 "Pointman". It's the only Government size Dan Wesson model chambered in 9mm Luger. Minus the front slide serrations, it looks fantastic. ($1400+)

Springfield/Kimber Targets are awesome shooters if your budget is roughly ($1000+/-)

                      +1 on SA 1911 9mm.

                      I have the Target model.
I brought 4 first time shooters at the range last week and they all enjoyed shooting it.
                      Heck,2 of them bought a M&P9 and a G17 later that day.
2 is still in the search for a 1911 chambered in 9mm.

I have a stainless Springfield loaded 9mm. Other than very low recoil and requiring reloads to be maxed for optimal operation the gun is fantastic.

I also have an EMP. It is my favorite pistol to shoot in 9mm. You can feel recoil with the Emp unlike the 1911.

I also have a STI race gun....not really a standard 9, it's a 9mm major ported. It's as smooth as glass but the brass is shot as it needs to be 20% over loaded. I'd stay away from them unless you really are into speed shooting.

I used to have one. A Kimber. Wasn't planning to, but I ended up selling it. The only other reason besides the great offer I got on it, was that I just enjoyed shooting the 45acp out of the platform more than 9mm. Almost to the point I can say: 9mm 1911? Sacrilege! LoL

I love my Springfield 9mm. It runs 100% and is so much cheaper to shoot than my .45.

Winchester White Box at Wal-Mart is 39 cents a round and the 9 is 24 cents a round. That is $150 saved for every thousand rounds. If you shoot one competition a month (conservatively 250 rounds) and practice once a month (100 rounds), that saves you $630 per year.

That seems to be enough to justify it to me. This is why I bought a Springfield 1911 Loaded 9mm. I love the gun. I had a few problems when I first got it, but Springfield did an awesome job fixing it at no cost to me. Their customer service is phenomenal.
If I had to describe myself in one word it would be "bad at following directions"

                                Springfield 9mm - Great Gun

I got a 9mm Springfield loaded target model to defray the cost of 45 ammo. It quickly became my favorite. I put thousands of rounds with no major issues.
I ended up sending it to Springfield's custom shop where they worked their magic on it. Incidentally, I highly recommend Springfield - their stand behind their products and will take care of any problems that might occur. It was a great gun before they got it. It is an amazing gun now. Note - I have found that the new match barrel produces slightly tighter groups with 124gr ammo compared to 115gr.
For me - the 1911 trigger and the fit are second to none.
