    Thoughts on 9mm 1911's?

I'm currently in the market for my first handgun and I've really loved shooting 1911's. I've been testing out guns at the range nearby, and the gun I keep coming back to is the 1911 in .45.

The only issue with this is the price of .45 ammo could mean a little less practice time than 9mm ammo (and I really need the practice).

So are there any downsides to 1911's chambered in 9mm? Any recommendations as to a good starter one?

Yes, buy some they are one of the greatest pistols ever made. I prefer the Belgium made ones over the Argentinian ones, but they are well made also. I don't like the early internal extractor ones due to the scarcity & cost of spare extractors. I've never had a Canadian made Inglis either. Get a detective slide & barrel kit also. I prefer the ring hammers & plastic or Pachmayr grips. The KRD mags work great for me.

I have a Springfield Loaded SS 9mm 1911 Target model. Close to 2000 rounds through it with no problems. I absolutely love this gun. I use it to practice with and will shoot either it or my Springfield TRP .45 for competition. The TRP has a better trigger etc. but it has a little more hands on time during the build than a standard Loaded model. It is fun to shoot, cheaper than shooting .45 all the time and I will soon be sending it off to the Springfield custom shop for a little of their magic.

Anyone know of a SoCal shop that does SSE on the RIA 9mm? PM me if you do.

I have a SA loaded SS 9mm also and the only problem I have is not enough time or ammo to shoot. I really love shooting this gun the recoil is low which makes shooting this gun easy and fun. Since I bought this gun I've changed the MSH to a Ed Brown Chain link with magwell and used a 19lb spring. I also put in a STI long curve nylon trigger. After some light polishing on some key parts I now have around a 3lb trigger pull which makes shooting this gun very enjoyable. I also added a nice set of VZ grips which do a great job of keeping my hands in place.

If you do get a 1911 9mm you won't regret it the only problem you'll have is your other guns won't get shot as much.

I bought my 9mm 1911 based on Jrara's review. I haven't been disappointed. Great pistol.

Own a bunch of Springfield 1911 9mm's and can recommend them wholeheartly. But be aware that they are habit forming...first it's a Loaded model and next thing you know your buying an EMP
