Trigger Reach

I've been looking for a full sized handgun with the shortest trigger reach for my wife. I thought the S&W M&P with the small grip would be the ticket but sadly it is not. She still needs to adjust her hand way too much to reach the trigger. Has anyone measured the distance from the backstrap to the front of their trigger? I'm not talking cocking the hammer back on a DA/SA to get the shortest reach but when the trigger is at full rest. I don't believe there is any data for this. It would be cool if we could form our own database for something like this.

Did some googling and this is what I found on trigger reach measurements in inches:

Glock Gen3 G17: 2.83
Glock Gen4 G17: 2.76
S&W M&P9: 2.64 (Med)
Ruger SR9: 2.68
1911: 2.7-2.8 (Depending on acc.)
CZ 75B: 2.75 (SA) 3.04 (DA)

Anyone else have any measurements to add?

XD or CZ pistols have ergonomic, smallish grip diameters. For really good trigger reach a 1911 with a short trigger may be an option to explore. Of course the Springfield Armory EMP (not a full sized gun) would fit almost any small handed person.

She needs my Cz p01, it seems to be a very female friendly handgun on the internet..

I think it has the best ergos hands down...especially for a compact..It feels like a full size..

Hmm, just eyeballing my G30 vs my CZ, the CZ is longer in length, LoL
CZ is thinner, overall much better in the grip, yea give CZ a try.

Really would search for single stack pistol.
Check out the 1911's with short trigger (& slim grips), Kahr and Walther has a few thin pistols.

Tried the CZ. The DA is a reach even for me.

I suggest dragging the wife around to gun shops and letting her just try them on for size. Yes, it's going to be a horrible experience, but like childbirth, she will just remember the results and the pain will be a distant memory.

I can only think of a 1911 style with a short trigger. The CZ75B when in single action seems to be a shorter reach, but I've got large hands.

Is there a reason it really has to be a full sized pistol? The world becomes much larger when you look at things like the smaller frame guns in this situation.

Shortest trigger reach is most likely 1911, For DA/SA, Sig Sauer pistol with the short trigger reach. It really makes a big difference, I have a couple (226 & 220) that I can let you or your wife try if you like.

was long for me i have sausage fingers, installed thin aluminum grips helped me, i never us it in double action, thats why when i get the funds i will be converting it to SAO

The compacts and the sp01 have very similar grips as far as reach goes.

Actually, the long reach on the DA trigger pull is a pretty common complaint as far as all the CZ's


Sounds like OP needs something with a nice, SAO. I think of 1911s as being pretty "small" gripped....but I don't have small hands.

i like the straight trigger and its adjust-ability, also want a comp hammer installed, and the trigger worked a little, i don't have enough confidence to do it myself though

CZ 75's have a "far" trigger reach in DA mode. I disliked it so much it steered me away from them. I bought an M&P instead. But you could always use it in SA but then you might as well buy a 1911.

I would buy her a 1911. They have the best ergonomics for any shooter, IMO.

For a DA/SA pistol the SIG p-series pistols have the best triggers, IMO.

Want it in fullsize to reduce felt recoil. The recoil on the smaller subcompacts is too much for her. I was thinking maybe a Ruger SR9?

The standard DA/SA guns are pretty damn easy to work on.

I've got lady small hands (but I'm not a lady) and those would be the only full size guns I can get a proper grip on without too much effort. Have you tried an M&P without a grip panel and just covering parts of the grip with grip tape? When I had an M&P it seemed to fit that way but the striker broke on it before I got a chance to live fire it. Then S&W CS turned me off enough to sell the gun (they blamed my dry-firing on the striker failure).
